New law for buying alcohol?

Hi everyone.

I've just been to tesco to get some beers in for tonight with my girlfriend. The woman serving me asked if I had any I.D, I gladly showed her my driving license prooving I am 21. She then states she can't serve me because my girlfriend hasn't got any I.D, and claims this is a new law (my girlfriend is not 18).

My girlfriend then confronted her asking what if she came in with her mum and dad and they were purchasing alcohol. The women was a bit stuck for words but still says she cannot serve me. I then said, well what if she just goes outside? Again she said she cannot serve me because she has now seen my girlfriend with me when I'm purchasing alcohol.

Anyways, the woman serving eventually gave in and my girlfriend rather embarrassingly had to go outside whilst I purchased the beer.

Is this not the most messed up law ever? or is the woman serving just being an arse?

Afterwards as you do, I thought I should have asked for the manager on the spot, and hopefully made a fool of her, but we just didn't think of that at the time.

Thanks

I bought a crate of Fosters and some Stellas. My misses doesn't even like larger.

The thing is I went in 2 weeks ago to the same woman with my girlfriend and she didn't bat an eye lid at either of us. She claimed it is a new law.

I could understand if I went in with a bunch of 16 year olds and was just purchasing alcohol alone, but we were clearly a couple and we also purchased other items aswell as the alcohol.

Wish I'd have asked for the manager on the spot to confirm.

She shouldn't have claimed it was a new law. That is utter rubbish. The point is, I've never had problems before and have been served by the same woman 2 weeks ago buying the same beers with my girlfriend. Infact looking back, my girlfriend even payed that time, she just handed me the money infront of the same woman

Not a new law, but i know up here they are really starting to crack down. They have a challenge 21 policy in all the pubs etc, if you look under 21 you will be asked for ID.

I was gobsmacked the otherday when i went to Morrisons for FHM and had to give ID.

I do believe that is a new law. I've seen that round here, but still have never had problems before.

That's an old law and is meant to prevent random strangers buying alcohol for underaged chavs.

She was well within her right to refuse to serve alcohol.

She claimed it was a new law and I've never had problems before with the same woman serving!

Because the store is protecting itself against making a mistake.
If you look under 21 they'll ask you for ID.
If you have ID to prove you're 18 or over then they'll sell to you.
What is the confusion?

I had ID to prove I was over 18 which I happily handed over to her. She still refused to sell.

Also not having a pop at you VIRII but I only questioned the checkout assistant, I didn't shout of or have a go at her, which some people seem to think I did.

I'd just never had any previous problems.

Whats more crazy is that after the questioning she served me anyway providing the girlfriend stepped outside?

Surely it isn't Tesco's problem, as long as they asked the buyer for proof of age. How do they know my younger brother isn't waiting in the car for me to hand it over to him? Its still on their property but surely they couldn't refuse because of that!?
