Following the discussion about which lens to get for a D40 I've taken Robmiller's advice and bought myself a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF Nikkor.

I'm loving how fast it is, the low light performance and the playing you can do with the shallow DOF. :D
I paid full retail for it, was a bit of an impulse buy but I'm happy with it. :) Now all I need is the sigma 10-20mm and my set will be complete. Until I want a Macro lens. :p

glad you are happy with your new lens.
So atm have you got the kit lens and the 50mm one?
Im guessing:
Kit lens for zooming
50mm lens for portraits
10-20mm lens for lanscapes?

:o Should have specified that the other thread wasn't started by me.

I've currently got the 18-200VR and now the nifty fifty. My aim is to use the 18-200 for a normal walk-about lens. I gives me a decent focal range to accommodate most of the shots I want to take.
However, I was in London on Thursday shooting a new bar for a mate of mine and even at f/3.5 18mm with an external flash and 1600ISO I wasn't getting the shots I wanted. They were adequate but the lighting was terrible so that was another factor which pushed me towards the 50mm.
As you say the 10-20 will be for landscapes that the 18mm end of the other lens doesn't quite capture.
I'm quite tempted to get a 2x teleconverter for the 18-200 as well so that I have the range up to 400mm encase I need it but with a minimum stop of f/11 at 400 I'm going to need a lot of light to use it effectively. I've also heard unless the conditions are perfect the AF searches quite a lot with that pairing.
The only alternative is the 70-300mm zoom but I'm not sure it's worth the cost for the extra 100mm.
