New look England squad (vs Hungary 11/08/10)

Yep he should be given a fair crack at the first team along with Darren Bent.

Yeah I'm not sure on Bent myself, looks good for Sunderland, but not sure that he plays well enough for England. It should be an attack kind of like

---Zamora Rooney
------Gerrard

So Gerrard replacing how Lampard seems to play for England.

Young looks a lot better than Walcott too, I'd play them two on the wings, Johnson/Young.

Were you watching the same match as me?

They were a hell of a lot better, players actually looked confident on the ball.

It's a friendly against Hungary in front of our own fans and they still didn't look that great. Sure it was a improvement from the WC but that doesn't say much as our performance was dire in the WC. It was a decent performance but better opposition would have punished us.

I'd echo the comments of most here, I think the most impressive players were the youngsters, particularly Adam Johnson, Gibbs and Young. All in all, it was a better performance than we saw at the World Cup, though England weren't bad in the WC qualifiers so we won't really know if England have improved until they get into the European Championships.

The state of the media in this country :(. In the Capello interview the question he asked was 'why didn't you stand up when the goals went in?'. Pathetic. Considering the new tactics, formation and players we saw tonight, wouldn't it be nice to hear Capello talk about them

They aren't interested in hearing what he has to say. They're only interested in winding him up and getting a reaction.

Not sure why people think Johnson was good, at all, he gave away the ball loads, fluffed his pretty simple chance infront of goal, which is harsh on Theo as thats probably the best chance he'll create all season :p

Other than that, Johnson had one long range shot, ok it needed a save, probably but was miles out and right above the keeper, frankly, easy. Defensively he didn't help, he often cut back and took the simple pass backwards rather than really try to get forwards and from the right hand side he's the single most predictable player in the league(excluding Walcott).

Walcott was useless, yeah, knock the ball into space and he'll run into it, then do smeg all, delivery, awful, attempts to dribble close to players, largely awful, one decent pass came from a very poor pass as Hungary were coming away from a corner so we had a LOT of players forward and caught them unawares, he actually put in a decent pass to Johnson, who fluffed his only real chance of the game.

Gerrard, nice goals, helped that a guy for some reason slid out from miles away and ending up ducking out of the way of the goal, if he stood up it would never be a goal. Second goal, woeful defending, woeful keeping(hands way down), but tidy finish and nice footwork, but sorry, neither of those goals are being scored against Brazil, Spain, or Switzerland.

Its Hungary and we still looked fairly poor and created not many real chances, and scored two frankly very unlikely to be produced again goals.

THe same team that was awful against Germany/group games, were THIS good in the qualifiers, West brom look world class in most games against league 2 teams, thats how football is.

Cole didn't look too great, but Johnson's link up play isn't very good, Gibbs was very nice but Young and Gibbs were both willing to change roles, running the overlap and making runs to create space for the other, the partnership worked very very well. Thats where Johnson falls down, he doesn't go to the byline and cross, almost ever, he doesn't run the overlap much because he doesn't like getting that close to the line, so his interplay with left or right back, is pretty poor. Young's been this countrys best winger for 4 seasons straight. Defensively we were awful and barry was downright dreadful, giving the ball away, no defensive work at all, completely unaware of whats going on around him as per usual.

Dawson made a mistake, yet again, where the hell was Johnson to cover, Jagielka looked good up till the own goal, at which point he looked very nervous for the rest of the game. Zamora worked hard, made space, won the ball, passed it around, looked to play people into space and had a great header on goal which was very unlucky not to get a goal.

Pele he isn't, better than Heskey......... he's so ridiculously better than Heskey, at everything Heskey was used for, well, being big(black and scarey aswell, i'll give Heskey that, he's blacker than Zamora).

^ in all that you didn't pick up on the fact Zamora actually had a shot on goal, that wasn't inside the six yard box :p

A good performance by the players, especially the younger players and to an extent Zamora. Johnson coped well with the pressures of international football and I think he could be the one to watch during the qualifiers. Gibbs also impressed me with his forward runs, testing the defence even though he is a defender.

However, this is only a starting point. England still have to improve their gameplay and we can only truly judge this set up once the team have a few more games under their belts. Also, The FA should schedule friendlies against tougher opposition like Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, Germany etc. to help the England players actually step up. We're a good team but we're not in the same league as the Spanish, Germans or Brazilians. That will only come if the team is tested properly.

Firstly I'm not calling them racist but there's definitely an arguement to be made that foreign managers get a considerably harder time in the media than British managers. Sky and ITV are the worst for it but it's pretty common across the board.

Like I say, I don't think it's racism but more a case of the so called experts, Ferdinand, Sherwood, Redknapp etc, not being able to comprehend any managerial style other than the likes of a Harry Redknapp.

edit: oh and Gerrard's class

capello showed more expression in calling for a corner than the 2 goals put togethor

game only came to life once rooney was removed IMO

Great by Gerrard, saved a disastrous defeat. Zamora has to stay in the squad, would have had two tonight were it not for 2 great saves. I think Ashley Young did really well too. Our standard of crossing was poor though, both Cole and G Johnson were poor at it, Walcott was bad at it, Adam Johnson's were ok but he took far too long getting them in, and he was poor on right wing, far better on left. I thought Milner played better than Lampard as well. Both Dawson and Jagielka looked far from....good.

Just got back from the game, first time at Wembley. That first half was awful to watch and I am not surprised that everyone bood off teh England team at half time.

The Hungarian "goal" was just one of those "WTF?" moments. The person next to me was saying what a good clearance and then suddenly its given as goal. Heck, even we could see it hadn't crossed the linewithout video replays.

It was funny seeing Rooney substituted, he just seemed to smash the doors open when going into the changing rooms.

The atmosphere got a lot better after Stevie G's first goal and was great after the second goal, certainly shut up the Hungarian fans.

Good evening in the end :)

Why is Capello such an utter ****? Would it hurt him to celebrate or at least smile when we score? How would you feel as a player if you scored, looked over and your manager is sitting down stone faced like he'd just lost a bet? Perhaps the players would show more emotion if Capello showed some.

They are professional footballers. They shouldn't need their manager to show them how to show emotion, they should know how to do it themselves! He obviously wasn't too happy with the performance.

I think we played... I wouldn't say better, as we were against lesser opposition.. But we did look more comfortable on the ball, and not so scared to try things. That was always going to be the case though, as they are no longer on the world stage.
