Gents,

Need some advice please - Which 1.5-2TB drive is the best out there? Would like to use it for games (second Program Files folder in addition to my SSD).

Been looking at:

2TB Drives
Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 (2TB)

Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST32000542AS

1.5TB Drives
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB

This is what I've come up with, but it would be good to know if there are others which are better.

What would you recommend?

Cheers fellas,
Rixx

PS - Not sure about the Seagate 2TB drive as it's only 5900 rpm. My budget is £150 max but for that I would be looking to get a 2TB.

Considered the Samsung F3 - reviews show that this is a great drive. But this is only 1TB :(

Reason for going 1.5TB+ is due to limited Sata ports on my Gigabyte motherboard (6) - (plus another 4 "GSATA" ports but uhm these 4 are useless).

Minimoke hi - I haven't gone RAID for the moment...

Looking to use all 6 SATA ports for data etc:

1 - SSD as boot drive
2 - Users folder for the win7 OS and program files
3 - Documents, data etc
4 - second OS (dual boot)
5/6 - Data storage

At present, I have a mix of HD's. 3 of which are 250GB. So looking to replace one of these for a large one, and look to replace the other 2 later and possibly go RAID then :)

Running 6 drives in total. 3 are 250GB, 1 is a 128GB SSD, 1 is a 1.5TB Seagate and the last one is a 1TB Samsung (not the F3, a HD103UJ)..

The fastest mechanical drive bar the SSD is the 1.5 Seagate 7200.11. Was thinking to get another one of these but then thought I would go for a newer, faster one if it at all exists.

Then began to ponder the 2TB possibilities! - Too easy to get carried away with hardware..

Was definitly considering the samsung F3's (still am in a way) but shame it's only 1TB! I do a lot of data work on the job - hence the additional space would be nice..

Sorry, I didn't press send straight away. You might as well RAID a couple of 1TB's and use them for all of the documents and data storage for the computer. Or if you really had to, get a PCIe SATA card.

I know what you mean mate, I have to stop myself from getting new hardware all the time. Quite a nice set of drives there though. I've got to get myself an SSD.

I went for the Crucial 128GB SSD, looking at Passmark though - I would have gone for the Corsair one - especially as they now have TRIM support..

All I would say though, is that these things can be a little tricky to configure properly. I spent some time setting the offset and tweaking for best performance in Windows 7

The 2tb Hitachi and the 1.5tb Seagate work out exactly the same in terms of cost per MB, my rule has always been get the biggest you can afford. I got 2 Seagate 1.5tb drives just last year and am already thinking of either replacing them with 2tb models or adding a few 2tb drives as they are nearly full.

Went for the samsung 1TB F3 in the end - not ideal size but the performance is there. Looking to put my users and programdata folders on there. Also to create a second programfolders directory for additional apps the ssd has limited space for.

So strictly speaking the ssd alongside the F3 will make up my windows environment. That's my justification for the purchase!
