How much formatted would you get from these drives are they 40gb formatted or will it drop to say 32, still great for just OP system.

Manufacturers use 1000's not 1024's in hard drive specs.
It's the decimal vs binary definition of byte debate that has been going on for years between Microsoft & Manufacturers.

To find what you will actually get, divide the HD's size in GB by 1072, e.g.

A 1TB HD = 1000/1072 = 932GB formatted space.

Thus, 40GB = 37.3GB formatted space.

The drive manufacturer is counting what constitutes a TB in a different way than Windows does, using a factor of 1000 instead of 1024.

1,000,000,000,000 bytes
/ 1024 = 976,562,500 kB
/ 1024 = 953,674 MB
/ 1024 = 931 GB

A "proper" TB = 1000 GB would be 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

This is standard practice for storage manufacturers.

I just changed the order to Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb, my motherboard has Sata 6gb on board so it seemed the best thing to do and £17 for extra 24 gig.

Gotta admit my money would be on the Crucial C300 as well, but these are damn nice for the money. :D

Sounds like a good price but it makes me wonder if 40GB is very usable today?

For example, Windows 7 64bit requires 20GB of space...

makes them more attractive for raid too. 3 of these in RAID 0 are the same price as some 120gb ssds and would wipe the floor with them

You're losing a lot on write speed though.

I'd still rather have the space (what use is fast space when there is no space!).

Write speeds not that important its only when you install something, 99.9% of the time the drive will be used in read so the extra speed will help there.

Very useable, i use intels 40gb SSD, with Windows 7 64bit, used space is 23.5gb, with 13.6gb free.

Thats with a 6 month old install, all my apps on the ssd, all other stuff on my samsung (pics, vids, games).

But as allways the larger the drive the better though, sadly those Crucial drives where not about when i got mine :(

Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay.
