Mariner Energy, the oil company that owns the Vermilion rig, reported that oil has spilled into the water, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Elizabeth Bordelon said. The oil sheen at the site measures one mile by 100 feet, Bordelon said. The company is unsure where the oil came from since the well was not producing at the time of the explosion, she said.
The fire on the rig is contained, but has not been extinguished, Bordelon said. One fire fighting vessel on scene was able to contain the fire, she said. Two other fire fighting vessels are on their way to the scene, she said. All three of the boats are owned by Mariner.
