My daughters PC has just died which, while bad news, means I need to build a new one!

I will pass on my current PC (built about 4 years ago) and build a new one for myself.

Since it is 4 years since I have built a PC I need some component advice please!

It should ideally be better than my current PC which is:

  • Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£15 Saving + Gigabyte Free Upgrade + £30 Intel Cashback **
  • GALAX GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infinity Black Edition" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **WorldWide Exclusive**
  • Avexir Core White Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17200C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U21331108G-2CIW) - White Light
  • Cooler Master CM-690 III - USB 3.0 ATX Case - Seidon Promotion Free cooler Master Seidon
  • EVGA SuperNova G2 750W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
  • SK Hynix 256GB SSD SH910A SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (HFS256G32MNB-2201A)
  • Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA200) HDD
  • Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Self build, would prefer nVidia and Intel.

Ideally would like to get it ASAP. Budget is in the £900-£1000 range (which is a bit less than the last build)

Any pointers would be gratefully received!

Here is an i7 8700 and GTX 1060 build. The ram is a bit ugly so you might want to go with a different set  but that was the cheapest 2666MHz kit.

If you want an unlocked i7 then you would have to increase the budget, as you would want a better cooler and also a Z370 board along with the i7 8700K.

Thanks for the swift reply, that actually looks just what I need. You are right the ram is pretty ugly, but the PC is at the side of my desk so I will never see it anyway!

Power Supply looks to be really low power, is that just me being out of the loop and the newer graphics cards and CPUs aren't as power hungry?

Finally, do you know if I could pop in to the shop tomorrow and pick it all up? Normally I mail order but that would take until Wednesday and I am feeling a little impatient! :)

A 550W is fine. You would only really need 650W if going with a 1080 ti and 8700K with overclocking.

There is an option to collect from shop on the shipping options. Not sure how long it takes them to get everything together but all the parts are showing as in stock. Maybe ring them up in the morning if you want to order for collection ?

Did you register the Black for the Free mobo upgrade ?
Sorry, ignore that, was for your daughter .. but keep eye out on your one ;)

Baring in mind 8 core intel is coming out soon, i7 8700 prices shouldn't change as that's staying out, the 8700k is being replaced .

Ryzen 8 core / 12 thread. Replace with Zen2+ in 2020 and should take crown off intel at 1080p hopefully
Mobo comes with 256gb SSD free

Audio on the b450 is better then b360 , if your gaming at 1440p the. 1070ti will smoke the 1060/970 and intel loses it leads at 1440p plus

And latestly , double AMD . Free 240gb SSD, FarCry 5 with the mobo and 3 free games with Vega card

Thanks for the advice guys, has pointed me in the right direction. :)

Either of yourselves have gaming screens , sync/75hz+ etc?

Not as powerful.as the ones above in GPU, but should be nice gameplay with Freesync monitor and 8 core ryzen to last a good while

I have an old Dell 2407WFP (with a Belnea as a second screen) and she has a 1080p HP screen.

The Dell is old, but big and used to be brilliant back in the day. I keep thinking of going down to 1 monitor but get a bigger 32" screen but having two screens is too handy when working.
