hi all

i was wondering what people think i should do about an upgrade.
the speed of the pc i have now is top notch bar the graphics card and memory.. i get blue screens now and again for no reason, and have had the memory replaced numerous times, so i was wondering if its worth upgrading to an intel core 2 duo? or should i wait for quad core?. if i did do this, and wanted to overclock to around say 3.4-3.5ghz as what most people get from them, would i need a loud fan or not?

Would it be worth watercooling all that or just a waste of money? because id need a big case like LianLi v2000.. Will set me back over £400 for the case & watercooling parts alone. But if i can get a nice hs & fan that will keep the cpu cool and overclock like i said without any problems, then i would do that instead.

Opinions? :)

Watercooling could do it I believe but air-cooling tends to work very well with the Conroe chips so you should be fine with the Scythe Ninja or Tuniq Tower as a cooler and both are pretty quiet.

It will set you back around £500 not including a graphics card based on something like a Gigabyte DS3, 2gb Geil PC6400, a 6300 and a cooler.

Hi, £500 for say E6600.. and good overclocking ram to get to 3.5ghz and upwards maybe? as for air cooling, how much difference would there be from it to water? say 100 to 200mhz in oc?

The thing i dont like about ram is that ive seriously had bad luck in the past, ive had Gskill sets replaced at least 4 times now and im sure the ones i have now are still picky (blue screens now and again) so im not looking forward to overclocking ram on a new system and finding out i get blue screens and faulty memory.. Maybe ill migrate from Gskill.. im not a big fan of them anymore, their customer service is brilliant, but ive had nothing but bad luck.. whether its just my system or if their all faulty i have no idea. Ive used settings from Gskill, other sites.. just no luck so im giving up on them.

So if i go intel (would be the first time since my first pc) will i get any problems buying ram and overclocking it?

GSkill and the Gigabyte DS3/4 don't mix anyway unless it is the HZ series but Geil PC6400 works brilliantly with them. However you might find that you are better with a motherboard based on the 975 chipset like the Asus P5W DH Deluxe if you are going for the 6600, take a look in the motherboard forums to see what is suggested.

I'm not sure what the total difference would be between watercooling and air cooling but I don't think it is normally enough to justify the extra cost unless you need/want the additional quietness that you might get.
