If you would like to apply to become a judge in the OcUK Photography competition, please send an email containing your forum name, your reasons for wanting the position and any reasons you think you'd make a good judge.
Applications are to be sent to [email protected] by 23:59 on Saturday 5th May

If you would like to nominate someone or let us know who you think would make a good judge, please post in this thread.

This thread is strictly for nominations and applications, if you have any gripes about what is happening please take them elsewhere. Any such posts will be removed from this thread.

I would like to nominate FStop11, he is pretty brutal in his critique, and clearly has a lot of technical know how. Seems like good judging material to me.

Fstop11 will not become a judge. He would have been ideal, and was actually one of my personal choices. But he has been less than complimentary about these forums elsewhere and that's the end of it.

Is there someone that is like a "general public" judge? That is to say one that doesn't know pretty much everything and only the basics.

All very well having people who know pretty much everything but there should at least be one judge who isn't clued up.

I've seen photos that the judges think are great for xxx color or xxx sharpness or whatever, but I think they aren't *that* good. Also works the other way, judge thinks the photo is rubbish for xxx but I think its great.

Just a suggestion...

Hmmm. The problem is, are there going to be enough people left, who are competent AND willing enough to fill these positions?

Ichabod Crane receives a nom from me. I've had some good crit from him in the past.

Yak can have my nomination too. It'd be a shame to lose him as an entrant though. ;)

I like the idea of a ¨general public¨ judge, who judges based solely on what they like rather than the technicalities of the shots...

As for nominations... youd think Scuzi as he is already the Photo forums moderator... and then maybe Gibbo or Vixen... two random but well respected posters from GD for the ¨General Public¨ eye on the images.

Actually I think Scuzi would fit the bill as a "general public" judge.

I don't think a 'General Public' judge is a good idea at all, especially when you consider the amount of times 'non-photography posters' can be seen gasping in amazement at the most mediocre of photographs, all they would serve to do is picking their favourites.

Technical score - you need someone who knows about photography to do this.
Impact - this could be done by anyone, but a photographer is going to be more consistent.
Theme Relevance - again, anyone could conceivably do it, but a photographer is going to give much more consistency.

Considering this whole situation is supposedly to improve the competition and remove score disputes like we saw a month ago, I really really don't think appointing a 'general public' judge is even remotely close to possibly even maybe almost being a good idea.

Id second that one! After all he aint too hot on the whole photography thing:p JK

In all seriousness yeah he would be good.

If you have a general public judge then you might as well scrap the Technical and in some respect the Impact category all together. How is one going to appreciate the amount of work and skill it takes without knowing it in the first place ? The competition will become what's your favourite photo, and awfully subjective. Where currently it is (tries to) as objective as it can by breaking it down to sub categories.

As for nomination, Yak.H'cir

Totally agree.

I've kept quiet up till now but what's the point in asking for nominations, it's your forum, just appoint whoever it is you want and get on with it. Anybody you don't agree with is obviously just going to be vetoed anyway regardless of the views of the section.

I know, I know, I'm suspended/banned/permabanned.

True... Hmmm...

3 judges, 3 areas to judge... how about...

Each judge marks only 2 sections.

General Public judge marks Theme and Impact.
Technical Judge marks Technical and Impact
2nd Technical Judge marks Technical and Theme.

But this is clutching at straws to make a workable solution that keeps everyone happy-ish.

Why the need for a general public judge at all though?

It's a thoroughly pointless addition.

There is no need at all. It was just a suggestion.

Please remember your manners guys, we're all people here, and we do have feelings. If you don't agree with an idea, it takes minimal effort to be polite about it.

I think SDK^ would be a possible judge, he seems clued up and is quite fair in his comments :)

And my post was just a 'rebuttal' of sorts, in response to what I feel to be a bad suggestion.
We can continue if you like? You made your point the first time.
