New PS3 firmware 3.56

I'll be honest and say hands up i only care about pirated games, dont care about mkv or using my ps3 as some sort of server running linux, all i care about is not having to pay for games, if i can get it for free then i will!

I dont want to hack and cheat in games and ruin peoples fun, but if i can pick a ps3 up off ebay for £130, add a 500GB HDD and send over loads of games! well im a happy person.

You might think im a **** but unlike some other people trying to justify why they want this hack and avoiding the true reasons, im just being 100% honest :)

An honest thief, how nobel!

I'm not sure how OCUK deals with comments like this but elsewhere its a bannable offence.

I actually don't care if people want to run linux or something. It baffles me to a degree that enough people seem to care but whatever. What annoys me is when it ends up being the average user that has to update every week because Sony are rightfully trying to protect their content (and 3rd parties will be pushing them hard to do so) and hackers are constantly trying to circumvent.

Then both sides sit there and blame the other like they had no part in it at all.

Realistically Sony couldn't care less if you use your PS3 as a bookstand or a SNES emulator (again, why this is so vital to people baffles me) as it doesn't cost them anything. As soon as the possibility for piracy of PS3 games arrives they HAVE to try and lock it down again. Even if they as a company feel that they don't need to the 3rd party devs will demand it otherwise they'll pull out which see's the platform stagnate.

In an ideal world of course the PS4 will be designed with people like GeoHot and the failoverflow team offering advice. Neither side wants to allow piracy and the hacky types would probably be able to outline exactly the kind of things that other hacky types will want to be able to do.

Looking at how quick they had the keys after sonys update it's safe to assume the gug is up for online play on the ps3. I know how quick the jtaggers ruined bioshock2 online on the 360 and you can see how quickly online games will die now on the ps3.

If I had a ps3 you will either have to play private games or buy another console for online.

Personally I think it would be great if people started playing private games again against friends rather than for a rank.

I think that this is just one of those topics that people will never agree on. Some people thinks it's fine to steal their games, and ruin other peoples online experience, whilst everyone else just thinks that what they are doing is wrong.

Plus Mini-itx is smaller, more powerful considering NV's Ion chip, quieter and a lot less power hungry. No brainer for me but I guess I'm a little too retro when it comes to consoles and I expect them to just play games. :p

If the PS3 had a decent media frontend (like XBMC), it would completely dominate for HTPC usage. I dare you to try and build a fully featured HTPC as small and as quiet as a Slim PS3, including a BluRay player, for the same price. With MKV (amongst other codecs) and XBMC support, the PS3 would be absolutely unrivalled as a HTPC at its price-point.

If this ever happens, I'll simply sell my HTPC and buy a second PS3 purely to replace the HTPC. A legit PS3 for using as it was intended to be, and a "hacked" PS3 for using with XBMC, as per the original Xbox.

Why would you automatically assume that people who wish to run custom content on their consoles are pirates? I have no intention of pirating any games, and clicking the Steam link in my sig should tell you that I'm an honest, paying customer. Please don't tar us all with the same brush.

It doesn't matter if you do or not! One enables the other. You want homebrew on a console, you inevitably gain piracy.

Any reason why you feel entitled to benefit from people's work without having to pay for it?

I'm over budget by £14 judging by the rainforests prices of the 160GB version.

I'm unsure if I missed any thing.

Seams reasonable enough though right? I could've gone for 1156 but would've boosted the price by £~30 because of the CPU.

Jailbreaks and piracy were already available for the ps3, it just previously required a USB dongle to work. Now it requires a CFW flash and modded software instead. The fact that I welcome legit homebrew has no correlation to the availability of piracy on he ps3, as piracy was already *just as available*.

You could passively cool that I reckon. Big hunk o metal!

But I've sort of derailed the thread. :p

You could use your 360 pad or mod a PS3 pad to be compatible with the wireless signal I think. What signal does PS3 pads use?

I hacked mine, tried some emulators, got bored then went back to OFW :D not really interested in movies and there is not many games on the PS3 I want even for free ;) as I prefer online gaming and I have live for that :)

Pfft use linux. :p It's a great PC, no such thing as overkill! :D

Can you set PS3 pads up with a BlueTooth receiver on a mobo?

Yeah yeahhh. :p

Not sure tbh, I don't think you can because of driver issues. I know last time I tried to use a PS3 pad to play games it was a nightmare and the only solution I could find was to download these third party Japanese drivers and even then it would only work with the USB cable attached. I bought a 360 pad in the end.

Well except you have to pay through the nose for a 6-9h campaign game
I would happily pay for games if all new games were £20 e.g PC games range.
Actually they should advertise average time to complete the games and price accordingly LOL.
And no I don't wanna wait for 2nd hand games.
