Hi guys,

The wife has caved in and I'm able to spend £1000 next month give or take 100 or 200 over if absolutely need

My current setup

E6400 @ 3.2
Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R
4Gb Kingston 8500
Leadtek GTX260 (192)
Hiper 580Watt PSU
x2 320Gb in RAID 0
x1 Western Digital 500Gb

I have been pondering over the last few days, I came up with a decent I7 system but I would like suggestions from others. I am also looking at going in a SLI setup maybe with x2 GTX260's or something, how do two 260's perform?

Also if I did buy two new GTX260's will my older leaktek (192?) work in tri sli?

Firstly what are you going to be using it for? If gaming as I suspect, from the SLI, then i5 is probably better, re the gfx Id get one of the new cards coming out next week, 5870

I'm sorry guys, yes its mainly for gaming. I have normally bought Nvidia and have been looking at the benchmarks for the 5870 etc... If they where a MASSIVE increase say over the 295 I might be tempted but from the looks of it performance is good but not what i was expecting.

The Q9550.. you think its worth not buying an I7 at all then?

for gaming theres no great benefit, the system you have now is more than adequate, now you can do one of 2 things, upgrade current rig, gfx card, PSU (strongly recomend) CPU (optional) and please your missus, or treat yourself to a nice shiny new rig, for a grand youd get a top of the range machine, i5 750 more than enough for games, could go i7 860 if you chose, you can get a SSD in there with that budget too

I thought it was worth moving to socket 1366 though for the future, This rig will need to last me 3 years or longer if possible as I doubt this will come a long again anytime soon

It's main plus point is DX11. No, i don't. You have a mighty fine system at the minute and just a few upgrades would be more than adequate to make it last a few more years.

Ok, so from what I see here no point going I7 - basically a waste of power even though I wont have this again for 3 odd years.

All seem to be pointing to ATI cards, I have always liked NVIDIA but i'm willing to "try" an ATI if everyone thinks this is the best.

Have I any more suggestions on a new rig from anyone or is the above the general concensus from all of ya

yeh im interested to know the answer as well. I currently have a q9550 and have been considering i7 myself (1156 or 1366) as i shouldn't have any worries with any possible bottlenecks of newer gfx cards with my cpu for a long time then.
