Hi.

Had some problems with the speed of virgin media adsl service. Bt infinity/cable options aren't available and have been put back again. So stuck with adsl at the moment.

Anyway speeds got so slow, we had to call customer services. They tried remote speed tests and various other tests and suggested an engineer should come out and take a look. At worst 0.3 meg, average of around 1 meg at other times.

The BT engineer came out, today. He installed a new master socket with adsl filter built in to bring us up to date, as we had some older type socket/ extension socket and then tested the line. He was getting a fairly consistent 5 meg speed and suggested the original router ( free with the internet service) may be causing a bottle neck.
D-Link DSL2640R adsl2+ router

Can anyone recommend a new router which should hopefully enable us to receive close to the estimated 5 meg connection.
At present we have two devices hardwired and at times up to three iPhones may be connected wirelessly.

Thanks

I'd let the, hopefully improved, line settle for a few days and then see what your current router is managing.

If it's still slower than expected log into the router, have a look for the line statistics, and post them here.

If a replacement is necessary what's your budget?

I would let it settle too. Line stats are very useful. If you get significantly lower throughput than your sync rate then its often an ISP issue.

Thanks. I'll log into the router and try and find some line stats to post up.
Budget nothing ridiculous as I'd hope to swap to a cable option when available hopefully by end of the year. Currently set as march 2013 but keeps getting put back. Just something that will improve speeds and get the job done if it does prove to be the router at fault

Heres the stats, I think this is the right page....

I see the downstream is 4804 kbps, does this now mean I am getting around the 5 meg speed as confirmed by the engineers line test?
Thanks

The laptop is connected via Ethernet. Port 1.
I run another Ethernet upstairs to my pc. Port 2.

If the lines reading 5 meg and the router is syncing around that what's causing the reduction in speed of 4 meg?? (Done some more speed tests and still got nothing significantly higher than 1 meg.

We have 3 iPhones a smart tv with wifi connection and another laptop that connect wirelessly. But none of these devices have been on today when performing the speed tests
