New router me thinks?

I'm having some network issues that I believe are down to my router, I've began to notice this more and more since upgrading to 50mbit.

In short, for web browsing and most single file downloads via http I have no issues with my setup at all. What I seem to have issues with is when I multitask (e.g. multi threaded downloads etc) or when I do things requiring inbound traffic (e.g. host a mini CSS test server).

The former especially results in my router itself locking up, its becomes unpingable from within my network and usually needs multiple reboots to cure the issue.

Since upgrading to 50Mbit I have amended my newsgroup client to use upto 10 threads to get max speed (was previously set to 5 for 20mbit) and I've notice that this also can cause instability with the router resulting in packetloss and deteriorated download speeds.

I'm pretty sure the issue is not my line as my line stats look very good:

Consequently I'm thinking that the Linksys WRT160N and DLINK pap Virgin supply just aren't up to the job, is this likely to be the case?

Assuming the fault is with my router(s) I am contemplating getting this one:

Anyone have any other ideas or suggestions?

Apparently the high amount of correctable words are not good so Virgin have an engineer coming around today to have a look :)

Regarding the router, I ended up upgrading my WRT160N to a DD-WRT firmware which is much smoother.

Regarding my line and the Correctable Codewords, I've had 3 engineers out so far and its currently being escalated to the head of the South East Network Management.

The Senior Network Manager that came out yesterday connected his test modem to my feed right back at the green box and was seeing the errors up there so its not an issue with the wiring from the green box to the pit, the pit to my wall box or my wall box to the modem.

Another update for anyone that's interested.

Another senior engineer was out today and him and myself went back to several pits on different legs in my area and were getting the same issue so this has been refereed back to 'head end' who so far have refused to accept this as 'abnormal'.

The DD-WRT router firmware on the other hand is awesome! With the WiFi power increase feature I now get good coverage throughout my entire house meaning I've disconnected two other WiFi points I previously used!

Be very careful boosting the wifi power – as well as possibly setting it to an illegally high level you risk cooking the router. Keep an eye on the temperatures and chuck some extra heatsinks in the box if it becomes an issue.

I'm using the DD-WRT recommended setting atm which I believe is 71mW, temps seem ok (when touching the router, not sure if there is another way to test more accurately?)
