New Samsung 1TB drive

News to me and it would appear to Samsung as well! While I'm not doubting that the story is true I find it a little strange that Samsung themselves have no mention on their site.

334Gb per platter is a serious achievment for a company who have not long had 166Gb platters as their top end. The sustained transfer rate off these things is going to be impressive to say the least.

There's a link in the Engadget article to a Japanese web page, and with a little magic from Google, I've been able to translate it into Engrish.

This promising quote from the article means nothing to me, but hopfully some Engrish speakers may be able to translate for us.
Shipment is started consecutively from 6 ends of the month.

Hopefully it's soon, but it could mean anything and that may not even apply to Europe, but we can hope that they'll be available soon. :)

This is indeed true. I know what Samsung are like so take this date with a pinch of salt but we've been hearing around 1 month. Both the Samsung and Seagate (should be available from next week or so) will be around a similar price.

The Seagate is better in RAID though as it has a few more features on it that the Hitachi doesn't. Samsung will be fairly basic in this respect as well. Seagate will also be releasing an NS version of the drive which is similar to the ABYS drives WD produce so will be better for 24/7 usage. Cost on this one I believe will be around £250ish +VAT.

Seriously, damn that Samsung disk is gonna be fast.

I am guessing this is why the 500GB drives have be come so affordable now. Wonder if they will release a 668GB Version :p

That's because Seagate originally had a load of old stock they had to clear out. Unfortunately the rest of the market decided to follow with the newest products which has created a price war between the vendors meaning the drives keep getting cheaper and cheaper. I can't see it going that much lower now really as they're overtaking the 400GB drives which could cause them stock issues.

It is official. The desktop storage market now has three desktop hard drives to choose from with 1TB of capacity. Hitachi's launch beat Seagate to the punch as the 7K1000 series drive began shipping earlier this year but Seagate officially launched its 1TB model in the Barracuda 7200.11 line of desktop drives just recently. Samsung has also entered the mix by launching its 1TB SpinPoint F1 series desktop drive. At $400 Hitachi, Samsung, and Seagate will offer hard drive space at roughly $0.39/GB unformatted.

I thought Seagate always had had the the edge in HDD technology, but now it seems Samsung is ahead with their 334GB/platter density vs 250GB/platter on the Seagate. Would be nice to see a comparison between the three. Send me samples :-D

this is what Ive been waiting for, more than 1TB hard drive make. Now just need the reviews to compare and then I should be able to decide if its worth the money or not.
