Guys,

Just installed a new Samsung 960BF and am a bit disappointed with the image quality, particularly with the 2D desktop - text seems blocky/broken up and has a red tinge like a shadow. Is this due to the display being a 4ms display and therefore 16.2m colour? I am using Cleartype (adjusted using ClearType tweaking powertoy) and am running at native res (1280x1024 32bpp). This leads to second question - you have to adjust this display using Magictune which doesn't work on my system. Software says my PC is not supported. Video card is Radeon X1800XT with Catalyst 6.3 on DVI connector. Anybody got this combination working with MagicTune? I tried Entech's softMCCS instead but display still poor... :(

Sorry for the rambling post but can anyone help please?

the 4ms response time and 6 bit colour depth shouldnt effect image clarity really. It might be that you are just getting used to TFT's after a move from a CRT? Make sure you're running at 60Hz refresh rate, and you could maybe try using this calibration tool to help set it up if MagicColour is misbehaving

Thanks Baddass, I guessed you'd be the first guy in here :)

Maybe I am just getting used to changing from a CRT as you say, but the 2D quality of this screen seems inferior even to my old dell notebook - maybe it's due to running 1280x1024 on a 19" panel. Maybe I would have been better off with a 17"...anyway I'll try the calibration and see...

Having no controls on the LCD makes it clean looking, but it's a pain if MagicTune isn't working

Just an update for anyone interested...

I managed to get MagicTune working by rolling back from Catalyst 6.3 to Catalyst 6.1 (didn't have 6.2 easily available so just used 6.1)

The text on a TFT can look blocky. That's a combination of using ClearType and the nature of pixels on a TFT - they are actually square with sharp edges, whereas on a CRT they're more of a rounded shape with blurry edges.

Try ClearType off. It's not essential - I'm not using it on my TFT right now and text looks just fine.

Also the 16.2 M colours thing shouldn't lead to a red shadow under text. That does sound a bit weird because TFTs using DVI are exceptionally clear and have zero bleed from one pixel to the next. Does it happen in word and your web browser - is it on all text?

Thanks fish99. I have seen this on panels before where there is a red tinge - I got MagicTune working and adjusted the colour settings and improved it, but I think you are right about cleartype. I will do some more experimenting when I get home. Also, the effect varies with different fonts so I will try alternative fonts as well..
