Just finished watching the WRC Season Preview on Dave. They showed you the Ford Team's preparations, and the Citroen Teams preparations. They also gave you some info on the new Suzuki SX4 WRC car as well.

And interestingly, all 3 of the cars apart from Subaru in this years WRC are hatchback Sized. Theres the C4, the Focus, Suzki's SX4 thing and some privateer stuff kicking around

But the move in rallying has been away from saloon cars, and over to hatchbacks. And look at the BTCC. In the old days it was Mondeos / Vectras / Audi A4s / Renault Laguns / Nissan Primeras etc..

Nowadays its Honda Civics / Integras/ Astras etc..

Motorsport is moving to the small hatchback factor. And subaru were the only ones left running a saloon car in Rallying. There is no mitsubishi works team this year, not sure if there even was one last year ?

So given this, its no supprise then, that the Subaru WRC team have had heavy input into the new car. And literally, they gave the Subaru designers a wish list of what they wanted in the car, and got the lot. Starting with the bodyshell

We all mock them for moving away from the slaoon car market, but if they want to carry on prooving their brand through motorsport. They've not got a lot of choice.

the Dave season preview was interesting, as they discussed the current cars shortcummings compared to the rest of the team. Explaining why they had a dismal 3rd in the manufacturers table last year. And Subaru japan dont like their team doing badly, so they explored what they needed to do to get them to win. So the subaru WRC team gave them a list of what they wanted the new car to have. And to quote their head technician, all of the shortcummings of the old car, are remedied in the new one.

Just thought it was interesting really, that the new car has been designed around the WRC entry, and probably Subaru Japan seeing competitive rallying as the way to push the brand forward, rather than DTM or whatever.

Yea but who cares? Crappy hatchback racing is zzzz. Powersliding saloons is awesome.

nobody said it wasnt. I just thought it interesting that subaru have effectively been forced to change bodyshell to keep up with the competition in rallying. Its why mitsubushi were doing so badly, despite the evo being a monster of a road car.

I still stand by the idea that they should have not called it the Impreza. Created this new hatchback thing, gave it a name, made the STi version etc, and then had the real Impreza, which should be more capable than the hatchback, proper looking, big spoiler, ugly child of a saloon.

that would have been perhaps better for the fans

but then i dont think the Impreza would have been anywhere near as popular, if there were no rally car.

The Impreza wouldn't have been created had it not been for rallying. But they made the Impreza when the Legacy was no longer up to the job, so why could they have not made a new model with a different name I don't know.

Had a nose around a new wrx at a dealer last weekend and it was actually pretty nice in the flesh, was the pearly white colour.
