Does the level actually end or does it just keep repeating? I can get to the halfway point, then keep going but I just run out of time.

you have to go across the platforms in a certain way.

I can let you know the route if you wish.

edit, BTW you hear a little ping if you get the correct way, there should be three parts in total.

To fully complete the game and get 3 stars you need to open up all secret areas and collect all star coins and then spend all the star coins (the backgrounds cost 20 coins each).

I've bought all the backgrounds, there doesn't appear to be any paths I haven't unlocked... most confused.

I think you also have to use all the pipes/cannons. I have 2, also.
