Hey guys,

This is my first post here, Im a student from N.Ireland, just started my first year of an HND in computing (networking and programming mainly)

Decided to join up as i just ditched my faithfull old laptop and splashed out on a new desktop. Im interested in overclocking it, altho iv never done it before, so doing a lot of research atm!

anyway, i decided on a dell Studio desktop

Specs:
-Q6600 quad core processor 2.4ghz, 8mb cache, 1066mhz fsb
-4gb Ram
-750gb Hdd
-256mb Ati Radeon HD 3650 graphics card
-Vista home premium
-24" widescreen HD monitor
-Logitech x540 5.1 surround sound speakers
-logitech MX3200 cordless keyboard n mouse

Plans for it are:
- to upgrade the graphics card as i feel this is its weak point.
- overclocking possibly

Has anyone any other suggestions / comments?

Hello there, and wilkommen!

Firstly, if you haven't bought it yet, don't because you could get a better system from OCUK. But if you have...

1) Yup, the graphics card will fall over and die when you stick any modern titles on there. One of these would do nicely:

2) Overclocking will be difficult because the BIOS probably doesn't have any overclocking options. You might be able to overclock in Windows using.....erm....I've completely forgotten what it's called, can someone help me out?

Claimed.

Also dell's are the work of the devil. Dont buy one.

I think he's already bought it :)

Anyway, theres a few Stickys in Overclocking and Cooling, guides to overclocking, take a look at those first. Although i think tampering with a Dell will void your warranty? Especially if you open it up and change the graphics card.

yea... already bought it, should be delivered tomorow actually

Your right, it does void the warranty, but i think overclocking does as well :(

Also ive read that the Q6600 can be overclocked to 3.5, which is quite a jump from the standard 2.4

Overclocking a dell, good luck with that.
If you try and upgrade the Mobo you will probably need a new case and PSU as dell like to use their own shapes and connectors!

Send it back under the distance selling act tbh.

+1 when that thing comes out of warranty its going to die a horrible fiery death.

Dell cut every corner imaginable they use the lowest quality parts known to man.
If you even think about Ocing it I can picture every cap on the mobo blowing or maybe the psu blowing.

I too would send it back by the same courier delviering the pc
dont even open the box instruct courier to retun back to sender
then contact dell advise them you have sent pc back having had a change of mind
once they recredit you get a better system for same money from OCuk
