I have just received my new tax code for 2010/11, and they have totally messed it up, so it looks like spending quite a bit of time on the 0845 number on Friday to get it sorted out.
It says in the blurb that this has been done by the new computer system that has been installed to make them more efficient, as computers do not make mistakes it seems the efficiency of the people they employ to input this information needs overhauling.

Has any one else been sent the wrong code?.

iv had a pair of letters, with two different codes from two different tax offices. got to say this new system is about as hopeless as the last syetem.

We've been told at work (tax adviser, yo) to expect people to be sent loads of tax coding notices as the systems seem to like to send them every time things get updated, rather than waiting to make all the changes at once.

Maybe worth seeing if any more show up - April is a while off yet.

what tax code were you sent? and why do you think they've messed up?
They sent me a code of 647L, my code from the previous tax year was 781T, that means my allowances have dropped by £1,335 a year.
As there has been no changes in my circumstances since the previous tax year, I can only conclude that they have made a mistake, and the annoying thing is I now have to spend my own time and money to rectify there mistake.
I wonder how much they make from the 0845 number?.

Revenue has sent all my correspondance to the wrong address. Despite never changing the address on my tax retruns and listed address of employement for the past 8 or so years, the revenue has managed to send my payslips (brown envelopes) to 4 sepaarte addresses in that time. All incorrect, and when it is corrected every January and July by my accountant they cannot explain why the addresses are changed each and every time to something just about in the same city. There is no resembelance in postcode, number or written address.

It's really quite bewildering.

647L is the standard code, which suggests it was last year's code that was wrong, especially as you don't give details of why you think it should be higher. A T code, which you say you have for 09/10, is a temporary code, so I'd be more concerned about why it was temporary, and whether they're about to iron it out and charge you some more tax for that year.

This.

They have messed up 5 million out of 10 million tax codes this year due to an old database being uploaded with a new one when the system as updated in the last 6 months. Expect a long wait on the phone - and you HAVE to call to tell them which is correct one. It wont get sorted automatically

I got one saying my code for a job that I left in September is BR (bum rape) for the next tax year..erm, thanks for the info etc

Contact HMRC to resolve it? Next time you start a job, fill in the relevant form to ensure you get the right code. Usually its P46 (unless you're a student full-time, in which case use form P38).

I did, and like I say I've been working on another job since, on the right code. I'l pop to the tax office when I get time.
