New to PC gaming- what should I buy to start my collection?

For Single player - Deus Ex Human Revolution. Its a thinking man's FPS with very good stealth gameplay and clever philosophy debates thrown in for good measure.

It was ok, but in comparison to the first in the series it's quite poor imo, also not really a true pc game as it had a multi-platform release and suffered for it.

But was wondering if you guys have any must have games from the past couple of years or so that you think all PC games should have

Past couple of years. why restrict yourself to such a short timespan? If you want some of the best PC gaming experiences then you need to go back much further.

Deus Ex. (first in the series)
Half Life/Half Life 2.
Thief series. (especially 1&2)
Mass Effect. (1st one)
Stalker series. (with complete mods)
Dragon Age Origins.
Planescape Torment.
System Shock 2.
Baldurs Gate 2.

Plenty of mods available to spruce up dated visuals in some of the older games listed.

Get Steam first : you also get Team Fortress 2 for free, which is imo the most fun online shooter, as well as being very accessible. Forget the 'Hats' and 'Crafting'.

Orange Box (a must). : Half Life 2 episodes, Counterstrike:Source, Team Frotress 2, Portal, and IIRC the old Half Life stuff?
Portal 2.
L4D2.
Skyrim.
Mass Effect trilogy (the ending sucks, but it's a great game up till then).
Deus Ex : HR.
Bastion.
Trine / Trine2.
Starcraft 2 (not my kind of game, but it's very good if that's your thing).
Look up Steam deals, they have some cheap games worth a shot.

And up-coming, Diablo III and Guild Wars 2. Save some money for those two.

Oldies but goodies. Half Life, Quake 3 (can still be played online, and in the form of Quake Live!), Quake 1, Thief 1&2 (brilliant games), Psychonauts, the GTA series...

Metro 2033 is a good atmospheric shooter.
If its your thing , football manager 2012 ( its like looking at a spreadsheet but i love it )
Starcraft 2 or Company of heroes for a good rts
Team Fortress 2
One of the total war series
Skyrim <-- very good
Battlefield 3

So many but there is a few for you to think about!

You could try a MMO?

You won't have played one on a console, so it will be a entirely new experience to you.

There's a huge amount of choice and varying degrees of quality, I'm not a expert on this field but I'm playing star wars the old republic at the moment and rather liking it.

There's a lot of mmo's now that are either entirely free to play or have free trials so you should be able to try most of the mmo's out there without paying a single penny.

Have fun and try not to get too addicted.

Batman AA /Batman AC

Battlefield 3
Dirt 1, 2 &3

Darkness II
Anno 2077
Shogun total war 2

Indie titles

Dear Esther (not really a game as such, but its got nice visuals and its interesting)
Trine 1 & 2

Golden oldies

Half Life
Grim Fandango
Doom 3 (latest rigs make this game sing)
Quake 2
Star Wars Dark forces II
Sim City 4
Beyond Good and Evil
Broken Sword games
Toca race driver
rome total war

This is the thing about PC gaming, there are just so many games to get, even some of the older titles are still worth looking at, most do run on windows 7 if you read up about them…

don't be put off with older games, many PC games that are old you can up the res to max, huge amounts of AA and crank up the details.. Even get mods for some to make them look up to date.

Enjoy your new rig..

Dragon Age 2 and Far Cry 2.

This. And Test Drive Unlimited 2. Nothing like great sequels.

On the serious note:

  • Minecraft is one of the more innovative games on PC (it's not the only one of this type, noted).
  • World of Warcraft is still the best and most popular MMO out there.
  • Total War series are excellent for any RTS/TBS fans. MODS!
  • Starcraft II - hugely competitive strategy series
  • Diablo III - best unreleased hack'n'slash to date
  • Amnesia - you'll crap your pants playing it
  • M&B Warband - very original medieval TPP with huge modding community
  • Sim City series - city building
  • Tropico 3/4 - replace "city" with small towns on an island
  • World of Tanks - tanks battles MMO
  • SWTOR - MMORPG for Star Wars fans
  • Orange Box games - some of the best games of the last decade
  • The Sims 3 - if you like that sort of thing, thousands of free items available online
  • Anno 2070/1440 - like Tropico or Sim City but better (2070 is modern times, 1440 - medieval/renaissance)
  • Skyrim/Oblivion - vastly improved with mods, high resolution textures, etc.
  • Battlefield 3 - must try on PC
  • The Witcher series - one of the few true RPGs these days
  • Stalker series - better than modern Fallout games IMO
  • Baldur's Gate 2 - don't give a **** it's old, still the best RPG out there

I'll add some more if anything comes to mind.

Play some classics too.
