New to PC gaming- what should I buy to start my collection?

It was ok, but in comparison to the first in the series it's quite poor imo, also not really a true pc game as it had a multi-platform release and suffered for it.

Past couple of years. why restrict yourself to such a short timespan? If you want some of the best PC gaming experiences then you need to go back much further.

Thief series. (especially 1&2)
System Shock 2.

Those looking glass studios games are fantastic but are a real pain in the back side to get working on newer systems (mind you this is all apart of being a PC gamer).

You'll probably want to try out some of the latest and greatest on your new rig so:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Diablo III (releasing soon!)
Battlefield 3
Tribes: Ascend
Skyrim
Starcraft 2
Portal 2
Hard Reset
Serious Sam 3
All of those are excellent, good looking games.

Then you have some more classic games:
Orange Box
Deus Ex
Half Life
Freespace 2
Counter Strike 1.6/Source (if you fancy a challenge)
Civ 4 (give Civ 5 a miss IMO)
Sim City 4

I quite like trialling MMOs. I've always found that at most I'll play one for a month or so before getting bored, so a free trial for a couple of weeks is usually great. I'll enjoy it and then move onto something else.

However, Aion is worth a look - has gone free to play now, although it does limit how much you can do (there is the option to pay).

I would go for things that would be impossible to have on a console. Chuck yourself in the deep end.

RTS's and MMO's. Check out the Total War (Real Time Strategy) series; there's loads of 'em so have a look at the time period that takes your fancy (Rome, Medieval, Napoleon etc) World of Warcraft (Massively Multiplayer Online) will have a trial option, I'm sure.

Welcome to PC gaming. One thing that you'll notice very quickly is that you'll suddenly be a lot more attractive to girls.

My advice would be to wait for the next round of Steam sales, which I guess may be next week (Easter). Then pick up some of the big publisher packs from 2K, THQ, Eidos/Square, Valve etc at massive discounts, you can often get say 25+ games for £30-60. I reckon for £100 you could quite easily bag yourself a good year's worth of gaming.

Being a PC virgin puts you in a great position for the sales because the compilation packs offer much better value compared to long-time PC gamers who probably already own many of the better titles in the packs. Yes there will be some filler in there but even so, 2-3 big compilation packs will still include at least a dozen top games such as those already mentioned in this thread.
