Hi all, I apologise as this is my first post and a whole new world to me.

I have dug out my old Lenovo Legion Y520T-251KL desktop. I’m looking to upgrade this to a decent level for gaming and understand that I can upgrade the memory and storage. This is where I would get stuck as I don’t know what else I would need to upgrade also. I presume the CPU, which I believe I can upgrade to an i7-7700. Can anyone advise how to progress and how/what else I would need to consider please? Thank you

Current spec I can find details on

Intel Core i3-7100 CPU @ 3.90GHZ
8GB RAM
1TB storage

What sort of games would you be looking to play?

An old prebuilt like that is going to struggle with anything remotely intensive/modern no matter what you do with it, even putting in a 6700 or 7700 isn't going to be a great solution if only due to them still demanding a fairly high value second hand. If you're wanting to play DOTA and a bit of CSGO you could probably make a couple of changes, assuming they're even possible with that particular system. Otherwise you're very likely throwing your money down the drain in the attempt and would be better off starting over.

Hi Gray, thanks for the quick response. This is exactly the kind of advice I need. The PC will be used for streaming and nothing too in depth, Fortnite and Valorant for my son, maybe Football Manager (If I find the time again).

I’m experiencing two beeps on start up and someone suggested there could be an issue with the Ram which is what made me think about upgrading.

Appreciate your advice so far but I’m completely new here, is there a thread for starting off? I’m guessing it can be budget friendly as opposed to buying new? Thanks again

Beeps could be a dead CMOS battery. The coin cell on the motherboard. If it's been in storage for a while.
I'd suggest getting it running and seeing what the games play like as is.
Will you be playing at 1080p? And do you know what graphics card you have? Google says it might be a 1050ti. Medium settings at that resolution should be fine.

Thanks for the response. It’s very slow and was before we got a new PC. Change of circumstances means we need a second PC so before I spent money, thought I’d see if there was anything I could do with this one.
I don’t understand why it is so slow myself. 339GB left of the 909GB available. I just thought by upgrading I might solve that issue too.

Best upgrade on old pc
Is always a ssd
Even if its a 2.5 sata not a m2
Then ram,cpu,gpu etc

But yes there's a point where it becomes
A waste of money
And more viable to build a new pc

Edit
But yes replace the cmos battery
You need to make it boot up
Before considering spending money on it

And some of the guys in here
Are great at giving you a build list
If you tell them your budget
Not my strong point
So I just tag @Tetras for those
He can usually come up with something
Even for a modest budget

Thanks bud. @Tetras if you could assist that would be greatly appreciated. Something good enough to play the likes of Fortnite/Valorant/Football Manager and stream. I’ll just say most cost effective as possible please. Thanks again guys

I tagged him 13 minutes ago
When he finally shows up to help you
Be sure to reprimand him
For his tardiness
Makes me look bad:cry:

Ps.
As youre a newer member
Not sure if there's still a 10 post limit
Every 24 hours or not
So if instead of posting
If you hit reply
It didn't use to count towards the daily limit
If that made sense lol

I think your current PC would be able to play these games, but for why it's so slow right now? I'm not sure, but it should be fine for light gaming and desktop use, assuming the graphics card is a 1050/1050 Ti?

Probably best to try and address that before you spend any money buying parts that might be useless in the future.

This is the lowest-end of what I'd recommend, if you were to replace the system:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £645.92 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Cheers buddy! Will look into this as I’m keen to try and start a build!

I’ll have a play around with this PC and see if I can resolve the bleeps and speed things up as you’re right, it should be ok. It’s a 1050 I think.

The problem with upgrading something pretty old is that you can lend up buying parts that will not be readily transferable into a modern system. It becomes a money pit.

SSD is the best value part you can take with as is a PSU (you haven't started power of yours) but this will add safety not performance.

Start with the SSD, perhaps add a second hand RX 580 or a 1660/Super/ti for under £100. keeping you under £150. Both of those can be moved to a new PC if needed
