Asked in cinema/hifi about 5 days ago with no reply, but you guys are awesome, right?! :D

Owned a pants TV for a while and decided it's time for an upgrade... Obviously OCUK forums are my first stop!

My TV cabinet is 44" wide, so probably looking at 50" max.. I can off-centre it if required, or stick with 43" max... Recommendations?

Primary use will be for use with an Amazon Fire Stick, just looking for a better quality picture. I have a Bose soundbar for the audio that I'm content with.

Budget of £700 max.. Just been out of the market for quite a whilst and whilst I've read up about OLED/QLED etc., I wondered if there are some obvious choices within budget at the moment.

Any help kindly appreciated!

People will correct me if I'm wrong but you won't get QLED with your budget.

I would say get yourself down to your local richersounds and take a look and see what grabs your interest. They also come with the bonus of 5 years warranty so can't go wrong.

I like my lg 43" it was cheap £450, replaced a Panasonic plasma. Was only meant to temporary TV when plasma popped and oled become more reasonably priced. But quite happy with 4k Netflix/prime looks nice. I

TV programming died in the early 2000s.

Instead, get yourself i.e. a 43" Phillips LED monitor (£579 from OcUK link) and use the rest of your budget on a soundsystem with some phat bass. Hook it up to your media centre, watch films and Netflix off that, use it for YouTube which is more relevant than TV because it's real people, use it for video gaming. Cancel your Sky / Virgin / BT package and make it broadband only :-)

I'd wait for back friday / ebay 20% off etc etc

£700 would get you a pretty decent mid-range 4k samsung 50"

Do you homework though as some models use different panels dependant on size. The 6400 series for example uses VA for the 40" and 55" yet IPS for the 50"

At that price you're looking at a good model of 48-50" like a Panasonic or an LG. You could save cash by getting last year's model as there's little improvement year on year (usually only one or two of: panel, CPU, or software).

I test TV software for my job - in my perception Panasonic have the nicest panels and image quality out of the box by a good margin. We don't set up/calibrate the image so couldn't say how much other brands improve by.

I'd say LG and Panasonic have the best software and CPU/main board setup, in general. Relevant if you'll use smart features, less relevant if you're just plugging in a Sky box or PC.

Haven't seen recent Samsung models as we don't test those, but my 2015 model (6400 series as mentioned above) has a mediocre panel and is slow as balls.

Bottom line - absolutely agree you should walk into Richer Sounds and physically see the TVs. I researched for months, but once I walked in the shop it was easier to make a decision.
