After a nasty run in with a flood damage pot hole ive got 2 nice chunks taken out of both my rear sidewalls so im after a pair of new tyres, 205/45/17 W. They need to handle pretty well, be safe in the wet and, since I do a fair ammount of driving for work not be made out of cheese. Budget around £70 a corner. The car currently has Pirelli P Zero asymetrico all round which are a both crap and expensive. Im thinking of something like the Eagle F1 GSD3 although I know the wear rate isnt great, anyone got any other recomendations? Also as a fwd woudl I be better putting the better tyres on the driven wheels and moving the pirellis to the back?

Yes to putting the "better" tyres on the front.

I'd not go with F1's after the wear issues and wear rates I've been getting from them. I'm now on Falken FK452's, and they seem to offer similar levels of grip, are cheaper, and according to owners, are wearing better.

I'm sorry what?!

I have all ways been told to have the better tyres on the back to stop the back end coming out, even when I was driving both my Zetec S and Coupe 20V Turbo.

Why would you do that? the chances of the back end losing grip on a front wheel drive car is less than a rear or all wheel drive car. More grip is needed at the front due to the drive and steering/cornering on them.

(pressuming he has a fwd car) :p

Those falkens sound good but it doesnt look like they come in my size :/ Anyone heard anything about toyo PX4s?

got the toyo's on our corrola tsport - v grippy but wearing fairly quickly on the outer edges (had the tracking done, all ok, must be my driving )

£55 per corner...

Ive had GSD3s on my celica 190 since January last year. Covered 13000 miles on them since then and still have plenty of tread on them. A lot of that milage has been dual carriageway commuting but plenty of spirited blasts too. These are on the front btw.

I'd much rather have the charecteristics of oversteer than understeer, but I guess every driver is different. I've always prefered oversteer, right back to the days of me racing R/C at a national level (going back a good 10-12 years).

You also get longer wear out of the rears on FWD, so the lower tread (still legal mind) on the back will last longer too.

So if you have a pair of worn (but legal) quality tyres and a pair of new budget tyres, which would you put on the back? ;)

Looks like F1s aren't available in my size so im looking at Toyo PX4s and T1-Rs currently, I cant make out much of a difference to be honest? what are the wear rates like?

This wear issue, what loading were the tyres you had? Am a bit worried as I'm due to get a pair of F1 Asymmetrics fitted to my barge, my current Yokohama AVSdBs have no abnormal wear issues but they are 94W tyres.

EDIT: Just checked Goodyears website and it seems that the F1 Asymmetrics are only avialable in my size as 94Y XL so here's hoping they don't go bald around the edges. :)

are you running the GSD3s in a 215 because I cant find anywhere that lists them in a 205?

205/50/16 is what i've got on. Bought from etyres this time last year. GSD3s have now been discontinued, so maybe stock levels are low for the 205s these days.

Ahh Its because youve got the 16" wheels, they dont seem to do the 205/45 i need for 17

These are the correct tyre for 205/45/17 W aren't they? Ive not bought tyres without guidance from a garage before, dont want to order 2 17" tractor tyres or anything ;)

Basically that video says, if your an idiot and don't know how to drive the best way to stop being killed is to fit them to the back.

I'd fit the new ones to the front, in a FWD car thats the rubber that deals with the turn in, initial grip and lets not forget most of your stopping force.

Would have loved them to do a stopping test new vs old on the front and back, very one sided if you ask me.
