New York probes 'gas-like odour'

The media hysteria at this kind of stuff is a joke though. Jovial responses are only to be expected surely? :)

The media response is to say that in this instance the gas is not harmful and is likely to be a gas main - or at least that is what I picked up from the articles.
I don't think anyone, media or otherwise, has suggested terrorism barring a couple of trolls trying to provoke trouble. Comments about gas smelling "iranian" and "muslims farting" etc are pathetic and I don't see them as jovial. Similar remarks were made by someone on 7/7 and that blew right up in his face so to risk being such a pillock again seems stupid, not jovial.

It's hardly a joke when it's entirely plausible.

Its the media reaction that OTT. You get a trivial even t like a gas leak and you get everyone running around in a panic. God help us if something REALLY serious happens.

Its pathetic, TBH, and plays right into the hands of those who want us running round like scared mice. So yes, I reserve the right to take the proverbial from those who are po-faced.

The US Department of Homeland Security ruled out any link to terrorism.

I see what you're saying, but what you would you be saying if this scare actually proved to be a disaster an hour later?

Really? WHAT MEDIA REACTION? Show me it. The only reaction that has been inappropriate is yours.
Here is the media over reaction .......

Authorities in New York are investigating a persistent gas smell across a large part of lower Manhattan.
Police said they were dealing with many reports of a strange gas-like smell, but Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was confident it was "not dangerous".

A stretch of the commuter train service between New York and New Jersey was temporarily halted, and some Manhattan office buildings were evacuated.

The US Department of Homeland Security ruled out any link to terrorism.

Mr Bloomberg said there were no indications of high levels of natural gas on New York's energy network.

"It may just be an unpleasant smell," he told a news conference, but said investigations were continuing.

And the BBC's Jeremy Cooke, in New York, says the city is returning to normal.

Across the Hudson River in New Jersey, officials said the source of the smell was a gas leak originating in the Chelsea district of Manhattan, but that could not immediately be confirmed.

"We are getting several calls of a foul odour. Our units are responding. It's in various parts of the city," a police spokesman said.

OMGZ0RHOLYMEDIAOVERREACTION !!!!!!!oneoneoneone.

Nope, not even the faintest whiff of a media over reaction, not a hint of terrorism or danger, a strong denial of anything to do with terrorism and several suggestions of a gas leak.

So where is the over reaction that you claim to be poking fun at? The only one so far is yours....

Are you trying to say that a strong smell of gas covering Mid-Downtown Manhattan and Jersey City isn't a newsworthy event?

I'll cross that bridge when I come to it ;)

But if we banned any kind of humorous comment because of the 0.000001% chance of something turning out bad we'd all be walking round on eggshells. Isnt that what the terrorismists want?

Potentially. But going OTT at the outset, as happens all too often in these days of 24h news is like assuming your house is going to burn down when you overcook some toast.

Not really. Daily Mail TV at its best.

How can you criticise the DM reporting when you respond to a completely non dramatised event such as this probable gas leak with your ridiculous sarcasm and stupid humour? You've claimed the media are over-reacting. Can you show us where they have done that?
You've excused your childlike posting as being a result of media over-reaction but if there was no over-reaction then you're posts are simply stupid .....
