Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone can help me out with this one? My bf currently has the 'off-white' Xbox 360. I would really like to buy him a newer version for xmas but not sure what it's called and if it is actually better than than the one he's already got? All I really know is that it's glossy black and got a bigger harddrive?

Also, any ideas of where I can get it from without being ripped off? We currently get the Xbox 360 games from shopto.net and they are quite a bit cheaper.

Thanks, Em

There's actually two new ones, both called the Xbox 360 S. There's the 4GB which is matt black and has 4GB of internal storage, or the 250GB which is glossy black and has a 250GB hard-drive.

The 4GB is available in some pretty decent deals at the moment, a certain supermarket is doing it for £149.99 with two games. You can use the hard-drive from the old 360s too, you just have to remove it from the big chunky case it comes in.

Also has built in Wi-Fi as well as the bigger hard drive (if you get the 250Gb) model.

Depending how old his console is it might not have an HDMI connection either which the new one will, but you would also need to buy an HDMI lead to connect via this method.

I think spending anything above £200 is a bad idea, shopto has them for around £180, game has them for ~£200, so I would go with shopto.

The new 360 has a bigger hard drive, built in wifi and is also noticeably quieter.

I would go with the bigger HD version myself as I like to install games on the HD and they tend to take up a lot of space.

Don't let a couple of the above posters confuse you either...

It's not called the Xbox 360 S.

It's just called the Xbox 360, if you go into a shop and ask for a new Xbox 360 that is what they will give you... or at least offer a choice between the two sizes. Since you already know what his existing Xbox looks like, you shouldn't have much trouble.

I can just imagine an uninformed parent going into a shop though and asking for an 'Xbox 360 S' and getting all confused.

hmm i could have sworn that it was the xbox 360 s when it came out though? obviously they must have changed the name once the old elites (120GB/250GB) had been put out of production? i really could have sworn it was 360 S when first launched. or atleast that's how joe public named it?

As for the Original Poster, get the 250GB Xbox 360. i wouldnt bother getting the smaller 4GB. some may say about the 4GB being matte and it looks better etc and the 250GB will scratch because its glossy. I think its best to just get the complete system rather than having to take your old xbox apart and you having to fiddle with it or even having to find some extra space by buying an extra periphiral (a harddrive).

Thanks for your help everyone, I think I know what I'm looking for now. I will get the bigger harddrive one and I'm sure he'd prefer the glossy one, especially as it's quiter and has wifi, I know he already has a HDMI lead as I've heard him mention it. I just bought him the new COD game but haven't made him wait till Xmas for it

Yes it is.

Not that it really matters, few stores will have any 'new' stock of the old 360s these days so there isn't going to be any confusion.

That may be the model code, but the product itself is still called Xbox 360. I bought one recently and the name on the front is "XBOX 360", not "XBOX 360S".

Say as a comparison, the iPhone3G and iPhone3GS, that is a model number that is actually used to fully identity the product, where as with the 360 it is not.

And yet it says 360 S on the side, therefore that's clearly what they're calling it. The reason it's not on the front too is because a) 'Xbox 360' is a brand, not a description, and b) there's no need for it to be there anyway. Unlike the iPhone 3G and 3Gs, they weren't being marketed at the same time.

That's exactly what I just said.
Xbox 360S is an indentifier for the manufacturer, not for the customer.

Just got my kinect and the quick start guide refers to THE ORIGINAL XBOX 360 and THE XBOX 360 S

Very much an identifier for the customer if it's the first thing that you refer to in the quick start guide :p
