Newsleecher & Giganews?

Well I would recommend Newsleecher as it is what I have used for the past couple of years. Really nice application.

May I ask why you chose Giganews? What sort of package are you looking for? If you don't need the huge retention that they offer then there could be better alternatives elsewhere.

I have used NewsHosting which was cheaper than Giganews at the time (I think it might still be cheaper but you'd have to check)

Would say thats as good as it gets, the best newsreader coupled with the best news service imo. Not that there aren't some perfectly decent cheaper alternatives to giganews (newshosting) or in the case of newsleecher some perfectly capable free alternatives (grabit).

it was just popping up as the/one of the best around when googling... i'm open to suggestions by all means.

i'll probably need around 20-25GB per month, downloading all the usual things that can be expected to be downloaded ;)

hmm, Newshosting gives unlimited for $14.95 per month, Giganews is $12.99 but 25GB limit... so Newshosting looks the better option really for minimal increase in cost.

does Grabit lack anything that Newsleecher has? what about this super search thingamiebob

As Smit says, the retention on giganews is rather good at 90 days, but you pay a premium for it. The 70 days you'd get with newshosting would likely be more than sufficient. Not sure on this myself, but do newshosting have servers in Europe? I've always gotten very good speeds with giganews.

As for newsleecher, I much prefer the interface to grabit although they both get the job done. 30 day trial on newsleecher too, so no reason not to test it out before deciding. Not worth paying extra for the supersearch service though, theres plenty of free nzb sites out there to use instead.

Actually the Newshosting $14.95 service only has 45 days retention - would this be enough? and I don't know if they have servers in Europe... Would it be any slower if they don't

I don't think Newshosting has european servers however it never made any impact on the speed I was getting. I did use Giganews for a few months and had no problems... Not sure why you'd need 25GB a month but if that's what you need then either provider should be good for you.

I agree about the Newsleecher interface being nicer. However I always use the Supersearch Service, find it really useful for finding things. (Not sure how much of a price difference there is.. It was free when I bought Newsleecher)

It basically means that you have 45 days from the time the files/posts are uploaded (although I think retention is only to do with binary files), to download them. After the 45 days the files wont be there anymore and so you'd have missed your chance to grab whatever it is that you were after.

Thanks for all the help fellas, I'll give Newshosting a shot.. and I'll try Grabit and the trial of Newsleecher - see which I prefer ($29.99 a yr for Newsleecher aint exactly gonna break the bank is it).
