Any ideas when these will be out?

Toying with the idea of going from a X850 XT to a X1800XT or 7900GT but dont really want to if these new cards are out in the summer.

I don't know if this is know but I'll ask anyway just in case. Will they still work under XP but not use their DirectX10 abilties?
i'd imagine they'd be backwards compatible?

would seem a bit silly though... unless you're getting the card and using it for the time being in preperation for when you get Vista in the future?

I have read that Directx10 (Avalon) will not be backwards compatable with the other DX9 series. But I believe due to demand I think they are trying to sort out a fix for this issue :)

Why do I get a sickening feeling when I think about how much vista might cost? I hope it's not something insane like £200.

It depends on which package you want to buy. There are 7 different Vista series from the basic to the ultimate

microsoft have said the with new security implimentations piracy will be cut down and vista wont cost as much. the articles at toms somewhere, but I would not both reading it becuase as I remember XP was ment to stop piracy due to the activation thing, which was cracked before the release so I cant see vista being any better.

XP Home Retail edition is about £170, or Upgrade is about £70 or so. I imagine the prices for the Home / Home Premium versions of Vista will be similar, obviously if you want the Ultimate edition you'll pay more. Equally if you want to hope that cheap OEM versions will start being available you could save some money. For a Microsoft product, £200 can hardly be described as "insane".

DirectX 10 will indeed be Vista-only and will be running DirectX 9.0L (I think) to run DirectX 9.0 games. As far as I know, Windows XP and previous versions of Windows are stuck with DirectX 9.0c now.

From what I have read, the going story from MS is that DX9 cards will be accessed by Vista through a Software layer and as such may take something of a performance hit.

I would suspect that a DX10 compatible card may have a number of issues running XP as the two OSs will look at the hardware in different ways.

Here is some info:
Note: DirectX 10 is no longer known as DX10 but Direct3D 10 or D3D 10

Dont buy one straight away, nothing is going to use it apart from Vista, and 1x single game, £500+ for that is a waste, by the time there is more things out actually using it, that its worth buying a DX10 card for, the R600/G80 that are coming first will be very old gen, cards come every few months, games and stuff take years, so as i said by the time we have a DX10 market, R600/G80 are gona be very old.

If you buy one when they appear, then when all the stuff starts to appear your gona be sitting there saying damn, i need to upgrade my card again as its struggling with all this stuff, it runs Vista and the Crysis game fine, but everything else runs like a dog, what a waste of £500+. :(
