That's why its 4.95-inch, 1080p screen is such a key tenet of the phone's appeal, and it more than gets the job done. It's not oversaturated like the Moto X's AMOLED display, though it can look a bit washed out and desaturated next to a device like the HTC One or the iPhone 5S. But those are relatively minor nitpicks. The screen overall is bright, beautiful, crisp, and accurate. At 445 pixels per inch, it's a fantastic device for reading, working, browsing the web, or watching movies — a perfect window into Android.

Not as good as the top few but hardly as bad as some people are saying..

I woke up to a dead N5 this morning. I've tried all the steps from this page: https://support.google.com/nexus/troubleshooter/3337561 except for 10 hour charge which I'm doing now. It had 70% charge when I left it so I'm pretty sure it's not a fully drained battery that's the issue.

Looks like I need to take a trip to Carphone Warehouse (where I bought the phone) to get it sorted.

I hope that you have better luck that I have had from the Carphone Warehouse when I had to return my N5. When my situation is resolved I would not want to use them again as a retailer, their support has been abysmal.

It's average at best for a 1080p screen.

But that depends how much you care about the screen quality in the first place.

I came from 8 (yes 8!) Z1s and prior to that a HTC One X, and the screen quality is absolutely fine for a 1080p screen. No it doesn't have the depth of AMOLED or the best viewing angles, but it's far from as mediocre as the Z1s screen was and at the price point the Nexus comes in at you don't expect bleeding edge performance. I can happily do everything I need to on the Nexus and haven't had thought to complain screen wise.

The One Plus One might make a mockery out of things in this sector however, but I hope that leads to better screens across the board.

Overall the screen is great, the only downside with it is the diagonal viewing angels are terrible.

This.

Seen two nexus 5 devices now, even in low lighting and imo they are perfectly fine except when it comes to diagonal viewing angles. Would like them to be a bit more saturated though.....

Majority of reviews (anandtech, android police, android central etc.) have ranted and raved about the nexus 5 being one of the best android devices for screen quality. I would say the htc one, nexus 7 2013 are still better for colours/saturation and especially viewing angles but unless side by side, it is hard to tell the difference.

The sony xperia Z has an awful screen in comparison.

I absolutely love the display on my N7 2013 and even prefer it over my one S now tbh..... I will always be a fan of SAMOLED for the true blacks though :p

Nice work nexus. With that username you had to own it tbh :D

hehe true :D I did have had the nexus 7 since December though :p

I have a feeling that it will be only nexus devices from now on ;)

Mate I've gone through a fair few devices and have always come back to the N5. It's a great phone and the battery is at best average however it runs very smoothly and you'll enjoy the experience.

Nexus only devices for me as well...that's if I can keep my smartphone addiction in check! haha

So my contract with Voda ended. Got a 3 SIM as they told me there was a very good 4G signal in my area, SIM turned up and had no 4G at all, rang customer services who advised that there is no signal in my area for 4G so cancelled that.

Stayed with Voda who have just given me the below:

-Unlimited texts
-Unlimited minutes
-5GB data on 4G (unlimited for the first 3 months)
-12 months free spotify premium (which I was previously paying for anyway)
-£15/month

Cant complain really.

Agree with Kona on the N5 screen. It is garbage you only have to look at it next to an HTC One to know the screen is pretty much MEH. It is pretty much the same panel as the N4 bar the res increase.

Not saying it is a bad thing but I couldn't deal with that pee stain.

Outside of viewing angles then only thing better I would say is the S5, HTC M7/M8 need to be seriously calibrated, colours are solid but just take a look at the rest of the anandtech benchmarks. Nothing Android is better calibrated then the Nexus 5, and it is farm from garbage.

I thou hate those viewing angles, but the S5 is such a meh device, camera sucks in the dark, build is just boring. Screen is beautiful.

Dunno about calibration don't really care either,Just from first looks at the screen it looks meh for something that came out last year, that is my own opinion of course. I don't think it looks any better than the HTC One at all & we all know AMOLED is over saturated which I guess is no bad thing.

O rly...up there with the best...

loooooool at the almost perfect white screen!! TN ANYBODY?....

Poor blacks/contrast and horrific viewing angles.

Colours are also on the muted side. HTC One screen smashes it.

Haha...I almost fell off my chair laughing so hard at the Nexus 5 contrast turning black - grey to white!

Despite the viewing angles, it's still a great phone and wouldn't trade it for anything else that's available at the moment.

Haters should just get out tbh. I am with the nexus for the software and timey updates. I like using android as it was designed. Not butchered. Now if we had Google playneditions in the UK I might look at other phones.

The truth is IMO Samsung, lg , Sony , htc butcher android.

Yep, it has its downsides, but everything does. There's nothing out there right now to make it completely worth changing. Fairly average battery and camera are the only really noticeable upgrades available on any other phones, but there's trade offs there as well.

I'm quite happy with mine despite going through 2 Nexus 5's so far one with major screen bleed and another with a **** poor yellow screen and severe battery draining issues.

On my third now which isn't perfect but I love the stock Android look, very fast handset and easily rooted/boot load unlocked, only mod I've done is tweaked the DPI so the icon's don't look so huge now.

Interestingly my latest unit which was manufactured in February has a louder speaker than my Nov/December units.

Nobody is knocking the software on the Nexus, just that the hardware is always lacking a bit (due to the price).

I'd rather pay another £200 for a Nexus device and have flawless hardware. I bet others would too.
