*** Nexus 5 THE Official Thread ***

Agreed. Nothing beats the simplicity of stock Android - everything else is just cruft.

Agreed...Each Nexus device has been getting better and I can't wait to see the Nexus 6.

It'll be awesome..

Haters should just get out tbh. I am with the nexus for the software and timey updates. I like using android as it was designed. Not butchered. Now if we had Google playneditions in the UK I might look at other phones.

The truth is IMO Samsung, lg , Sony , htc butcher android.

I really can't understand why Google insist on selling GPe's only in the US. Wish we had the option to buy them here as well as I'd jump at the opportunity.

Yup the screen is very poor when viewing from diagonal angles :( Good thing I don't view pure black screens in a pitch black room :p

I will try to post some comparison pics of mine compared to the nexus 7 2013.

I do think there are different suppliers for the screens though, as one of my friends look quite a lot better than display models in phone shops and slightly better than my other friend's nexus 5, was very similar to my nexus 7, nexus 7 was a bit more saturated with better viewing angles.

As for camera, the nexus 5 has a superb camera now, someone posted comparison pics to the note 3 and the nexus 5 on xda and the n5 looked better, saying that imo, the gs 4/note 3 camera are pretty poor, largely because they cant' capture motion very well and suck at low light. Just wish the FOV was wider on the n5! Hopefully the "wide screen/16.9" option is "enabled" in the stock camera soon as well slow motion recording.....

HDR+ photos from it look incredible imo.

Question though, how often are people looking at their phone from such an angle? Personally when I use a phone it's pointed right at me.

I look at my phone head on, never at extreme angles and the screen looks superb. Nice and bright, very pin sharp.

@Nexus18 agreed the camera is great on the N5 and with further updates pending on the camera app that was just released it will only get better.

For the value that the N5 offers it can't be beaten and IMO Google have knocked it out of the park with this phone.

The truth is IMO Samsung, lg , Sony , htc butcher android.

There's always the Moto X...

Not hatin' on this phone at all...just pointing out it has flaws just like all phones. It's as bad as TW, no sd slots, crap battery life, poor camera etc.

With this phone you don't need such a room :p

Plenty..when it's sat on my desk, watching YT with it propped up. Why should it be so carp in the first place?

The Nexus 5 screen is average at best in my opinion, I'd even go as far to say that it's maybe the weakest point of the phone. I've owned one since launch and have had three different handsets due to a faulty mic on the first and rattling buttons on the second, all three screens were the same. Colours pretty washed out, lightbleed in dark conditions, poor viewing angles. Having also owned a note 3, Xperia z ultra and G2 recently i can say that the nexus 5 has the worst screen by far. Even my Nexus 10 screen is far superior. The only good thing i can say about the screen is that text is very sharp, other than that I'm not impressed.

The only thing keeping me on the N5 at the moment is stock android and the overall experience. This phone absolutely flys and is a joy to use. The speed and smoothness is better than all of the phones that i mentioned above. It has made almost every other phone feel laggy to me now! This phone is unbeatable at the pricepoint it is at, but people saying it has one of the best screens out there have either not owned other recent phones or are kidding themselves... or your eyes need testing :p

Don't even get me started on the hiss on the audio when recording a video  but other than that I'm happy with my N5. I just really hope 4.4.3 sorts the audio issues out, otherwise I'll probably dump it for an G3.

4.4.3 will hopefully fix a lot of the issues that the N5 has.

I'll probably do the same and get a G3 if it lives up to my expectations and keeps the same form factor as the G2 and has an epic battery life.

The only thing that I don't like about the N5 is the battery life and that's with running Franco kernel.

@kona True about the skin being next to nothing on the Moto X. Had the 32GB version been available I would've probably bought it.

Yup, I just can't justify spending £400+ on a phone these days and even more so since getting a nexus 7 2013 stoosh!

Besides, the only phone(s) that tempt me these days are the htc one(s), can't stand Samsung phones any more, just same old boring **** like apple.... and with that puke worthy software skin.....

Was between this and the moto x for me, I went with the nexus 5 in the end for these reasons:

- guaranteed support and fast updates (main reason, so ****ing fed up with getting a phone only for it to be dropped for support or/and take 4+ months for an update to arrive......)
- NFC (at first I thought meh but then remembered the tags and how you just touch your phone against them and automate things so quite handy imo!)
- biggish nice screen (imo)
- great camera overall, especially in low light (where I want an improvement in mobile camera!)

Moto x without a doubt had the better feel/ergonomics, slightly better battery, better speaker and SAMOLED screen + activ notifications but the camera looked terrible in low light........

If I am disappointed with the nexus 5, I will just return it and try the moto x out and if it doesn't impress me either, return it and wait for the next nexus or moto x :p

I hear what you're saying Nexus and the VFM that the Nexus devices bring to the consumer with their features, they're very hard to beat.

Samsung has become like Apple and touchwiz is just garish and I'm not into the all the bells and whistles and kitchen sink that Samsung throw into their phones just doesn't interest me.

I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the Nexus 5, the speed and responsiveness is second to none and it does basically everything that you want it to without a stutter or hiccup.

Plus 4.4.3 is imminent and you'll be getting updates for the next 18 months at least so you'll always be running the latest and greatest software.

Moto X+1 should be out soon, I really hope they just take the panel in the S5 and keep it at 4.7", and drop a dual core version of the S801, fix the crappy camera, maybe a SD card and global release. Would be a pretty awesome device.

Shouldn't be disappointed with the N5, I really like mine!

I much prefer it to the S4 and the HTC One I had, and I much much prefer it to the Z1.

I like the screen, the feel of the phone, the camera and the speed. Oh and I love the wireless charging!

Only 2 down sides I can think of are lack of micro sd slot... no issue to me really! Sound, the HTC One was the best sounding phone I have had, and I care not for sound and even I noticed!

viewing angle though come on... when i use my phone as an adult i hold it in front of me...

The camera on the moto x is pretty damn good after getting a few updates, it just seems to be a bit hit and miss and down to software optimisation, low light/night shots look terrible though, looks like moto just increase the exposure a **** load as well as sharpening so LOADS of noise :( Shame as it could have had an awesome camera overall.

I hope they add wireless charging, nfc, slightly bigger screen this time round.

Honestly the problem is that no phone is perfect right now. I want an iphone quality Nexus device but it simply doesn't exist. I would be willing to pay a premium for it too!

Samsung and HTC are completely off the radar for me now, I dislike non-stock software more and more with each new device they release. The MotoX is probably the only other Android device on the market that is usable at all, and it's a brilliant device however the Lenovo takeover leaves me uneasy for their future.

Basically the fact that the Nexus5 isn't perfect so far as hardware is concerned is irrelevant because for me it's the only usable choice (with the MotoX) however the Nexus5 does have some standout hardware too like the camera which is very good.

What I want is a Google Pixel phone (remember the pixel the macbook pro quality google laptop?) that would be awesome.

Nobody is knocking the software on the Nexus, just that the hardware is always lacking a bit (due to the price).

I'd rather pay another £200 for a Nexus device and have flawless hardware. I bet others would too.

Software is perfect, though I wish at times it had a few more bells and whistles, the smaller things like a kill all open apps button couldn't be harmful, but I'm just being picky there lol.

I ended up getting an S5 aswell, gonna be selling the One M8. It was nice but I missed Samsung and Touchwiz (yes I quite like Touchwiz haha). Loving it so far to be honest. I'm sure there'll probably be a GPE for the S5 later down the line, but I'd probably stick with TW. The Snapdragon is not struggling to carry the heavy TW skin at all so it's a bonus, a quick disable of some of the junk apps and all is well!

I have to agree with jimlad. The sort of people that care about viewing angles on a phone are usually the same sort of people that don't receive phone calls to said phone because they have no friends:p
