Yes it's fairly poor really, not sure if that can be software fixed, would like to think so
I too found the speak on the Nexus 5 to be pretty poor, almost makes it pointless setting an alarm clock as it's too quiet
Apart from that & having no MicroSD card slot.. perfect phone for me (although still not loving android that much)

root your phone and get the franco kernel app
you can increase the volume of the speaker as well as headphone output, as well as calibrate the screen and run a custom kernel to increase performance and save battery life.

its the crappy sound quality not the volume that's the problem
the kernel cant help that
If I see any of my mates with a screen protector I peel it off and take their abuse. Disgusting things that are a insult to a screen. Get a flip case if your worried. I keep my phone naked. I have insurance for damage

Same here, I usually take care of my phones (doesn't matter what it is), my LG L7 P710 looks like new
Wouldn't Rooting your phone void the warranty? I'm on a business contract at o2 and have a replacement within 12-24 hours. I've never felt the need to root the phone, but if the battery life is better and if it can improve the camera (or add more options) I might think about it.

One thing I am disliking is where the speakers are positioned. When holding landscape it's most comfortable when I have it firmly between my hands which muffles the speakers.
It's shocking, isn't it? Clearly no prototype was used when designing in this, as it would crop up very quickly in real world use.

I my insurance with my bank let's me claim twice a year for £25. Never used it on my phone. One day I might become a cropper but just think the screen protectors look and feel terrible. I guess that's why phone companies don't make or supply them

It's the normal place to put speakers for some stupid reason - it makes no sense.
HTC got it right, as did Sony, but other manufacturers seem to forget that audio is half of the experience when consuming media
Mine did it when it updated a few days ago and the update turned hotword detection off.
Settings > Voice . "Ok Google" hotword detection > Flick switch to ON

I'm not comparing it to the front-facing ones (which, as you say, is how it should be), more the fact that it's placed in the bottom-right corner in landscape orientation, making it nearly impossible to hold while playing a game without covering the speaker frequently.
Anywhere else (except the bottom left), including the rear, would have been better.

It should work on English UK also now, mine is set to it, and works fine.
