Bath is well worth the extra travel time. Otherwise: Brighton, Winchester (definitely nice there), Totnes, Hastings, Malden, Isle of Wight, Sandbanks.

Another vote for Bath, the traffic is awful and the parking can be manic however, you may be better taking the train if you do want to go to Bath.

Still vote Colchester:
Day 1: Go to the castle and spend the day pottering around town
Day 2: Zoo, one of the best Zoos in the country
Day 3: Train to Frinton, walk all the way along to walkton or vice-verson, maybe bike ride?
Maybe go to the theatre one night, normally something on!
Theres quite a lot to do after looking into it, just needs more than £0 which i normally have haha xD
Bath is a good option. Really liked it when I was there - pretty relaxed and very scenic.

I've say that Bath and Cambridge are pretty similar really, both have a river going thru, both seem to be pretty popular with tourists, they seem to be a similar size, there's not much in it really.
Cambridge is however closer to Gatwick so it's a good call.

It has it all so why waste your time going anywhere else.
Bournemouth, on the beach plenty to see and do around the area. Although according to google it is 2hours 2 mins away but I figured they may be wiggle room

not really read the thread then hehe, his GF goes to Bournemouth uni, last place they want to go for a break.
Bath is a good shout, but then again so is winchester. or chichester/arrundel.
