Nightmare... Oil in my water.

Hi there

The 997 has something called an AOS I think, its an air/oil separator just can't remember the correct name term for it.

My point is when it goes I think it causes same symptoms and is about £150 so make sure to check that before spending big bucks!

Have a read and do the checks, but I got a bad feeling that's not the issue with yours. :(

Hey Gibbo,

Mine also has the aos but I was under the impression that when it goes it causes massive amounts of smoke out the back. It is a little paper membrane that sits between some pipes at the back left of the engine. Either way I am sure that I will have a much better idea come Thursday. Until then it gives me something else to look at.

I have the workshop manual so will have a little dig around and see what I can see.

I had head gasket symptoms on a 911 I owned a few years back and this is what it turned out to be. Changed it myself and flushed the cooling system, rectified issues.

Thing was I was actually removing the engine to do the head gasket change when I discovered this by chance :)

Sadly this in not an uncommon story with 911's, people bail out of them when they find a big issue and sell them 'attractively' priced. Car checks out on the normal checks and is to intents and purposes is fine, but sadly things like this simply don't show their head unless you get a specialist to check it over, assuming it isn't just one of this things of course. You have a £70K motor, big bills are always the risk even when you don't pay £70K for it. Personally I would get a well known indi to sort it, but if you fancy a challenge why not.

I am always up for a challenge but I don't have the knowledge. Don't get me wrong I have watched more discovery turbo than most and am happy working on my cars, I removed the boxsters roof and repaired it as well as change brakes etc but looking through the workshop manual this looks like a much bigger job.

If I end up doing it myself I am sure to crack on with a project thread so will update here and let you know the outcome. Kind of weary and excited but if I can save myself a huge chunk of labour by getting the head off and sending it to a specialist myself then I may

I mean what is the worst that can happen?

If you end up doing diy I'm more than game to help

Nice one and your close :D at this rate I will have a small army and it will be done in a day :)

Just another thought - doing it myself grants me at least 50 man points should it come to that.

I can't see it being much worst that getting an s4 engine in and out.

Are you ok for tools?

That's where my kawasaki mate comes in.. Alex, he has a big ass toolbox, I don't really have anything of worth, a few spanners and a socket set but that's about it. Obviously I would buy anything that we needed. Could also possibly borrow a lift for a while.

Forgot to mention Mrs Vince makes a cracking coffee ;)

Work shop manuals would really help for torque wrench settings and lots of curry containers for nuts and bolts

I was talking about your car when I went to see my dad today. We both thought a recon head or two would be the best bet

I think you guys are right, I am now booked in for thursday and Just spoke to hartech, if i drop and strip the engine myself then we are looking at £2200 + 700 for a full rebuild. Sounds much more palatable.

I recommend checking the oil air separator first, I'm pretty sure you can remove it with the engine in place. On mine the seal that keeps the oil and water separate had perished causing the fluids to mix thus giving head gasket type symptoms.

The garages that gave you advice haven't even seen your car, I'm amazed they can give you such a detailed diagnosis such as a cracked cylinder head over the phone.

Aye dude welcome to my world. Quite funny had a conversation with hartech again today (doh I already said this) and went over some bits, they were still sure it was a cylinder head and we were talking about their rebuild costs.

The guy basically said it starts at 2.2k and you can go as far as you want up to about 10k. At that point I could bearly hold it in....

"Put about 10k into this and it will decimate all"

Well all is not well in the world of my car but to be fair it could be worse. There doesn't appear to be any exhaust gasses getting into the cooling system and the cylinders are giving good compression readings. There also doesn't appear to be any issues with the AOS.

So there and then I bit the bullet, the weekend after next she goes in for the engine to be dropped and rebuilt. It's going to cost a small fortune but once it's done it's done and I can continue to enjoy her for years to come :D

If Baz is doing the work, you'll get a stronger engine back for sure. :)

Hartech are doing the work....?

No Hartech are not doing the work, to be honest they are just too far away the car is going to a local specialist who used to build race cars. No doubt he knows a thing or two about these engines as there were seveal porsches in there.

When I went down there there was a flat 4 scoobie engine being rebuilt as well as several restoration projects going ahead, one on an old early 1920's buick and another on an old porsche. Ill grab some pics when I drop the car off next weekend.

I think it needs 15k to decimate all. Double check before you invest

Ahh you see, I was clearly not remembering my figures. I need to do more research before, possibly watch the fast and furious a few more times before I am well enough versed to make such statements.
