Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor

Uhhh... The other superwides are nearly as good for an awful lot less moolah? :D

If you like your wides, and can afford it though, then I don't see why not.

Easy peasy! Save yourself a shed load and get the Tokina 12-24. Its gets a very favourable review and only just misses out on the Nikon with slightly more flare issues if you poke it at the sun. :p

Cheers for the replies! :)

OK, I will let you all know the story.

I'm going to France in a month's time for the Le Mans Classic - its classic cars racing on the Le Mans circuit with half hour races back-to-back for 24 hours. Im going down in a Morgan - hence next to no luggage space. This means I cant take my 120-300 2.8

I would really only be able to take one or two lenses. I also hate changing lenses in the field (fiddly, dust on sensor etc etc), so I was after one of the new 18-200 VR nikkors. However, these are like hen's teeth unless you are willing to pay around £600+. Now, I'm not willing to pay such an amount for such a lens.

Therefore it looks like I would have to take my 18-70 and Sigma 70-300 APO, which I'm not all that happy about.

Now, the car owners clubs from all over Europe are going to be there. There will be rows and rows of awesome cars to photograph - such as a line of dozens or so 911s from just one generation (e.g 996). Therefore I thought a wider lens would be fun for capturing such shots. I could also use it for landscapes etc too. I could take a 12-24 for close ups, and my 70-300 for the track stuff. And thats where we came in. Sorry for the long post!

OK, knowing what you want the lens for now then, I guess you have to ask yourself, how much milage (beyond this event) are you going to get out of it?
If you think you'll use the lens a lot, then go for the Nikkor - but if you think it'll just make the odd appearance here and there, I would still get a superwide, but the Tokina or perhaps the Sigma.

10mm for the win

Like Hoodi said, unless you think you're gonna get a load of usage out of it, perhaps stick to the 'lesser' superwides?

This is a toughie.

I also want a D200 too. :(

Hehe, i got one of them, and the next best thing to the Nikon, the 12-24 Sigma EX.

If i was you i'd make/find space for the 120-300, you WILL regret not taking it, put it under your feet, behind your head, strapped to a wheel but make sure you take it or you might as well not go.

Thanks Slime. it is so gutting that I cannot take the lens, but I really really cant. :( :(

Im kinda tempted by the Sigma 10-20 at the mo. I am put off by the 12-24 Sigma because of the filter issue.

Hmm....

I'd even consider putting the 120-300 on my lap I'd be that keen to take it :D
