Nikon 55-200mm VR. Any good?

I've seen these for sale on the bay from HK, not badly priced. A friend has D40x body only (she thought it was the whole kit+ lens...) and needs a lens badly. Any other lenses that I should consider?

The 18-55 would probably be more useful if you're buying one lens on a budget. The 55-200 VR is by all accounts great value but you'd have to consider its usefulness as a walkabout lens.
