I'm looking at getting a new lens for my Nikon D50, however I'm unsure of which one to get. I have identified that the best type for me to get would be a 70-300mm lens, however I don't know what lens fitting it is I need to get, I have found 2 Nikon lenses that are 70-300mm, however they have a great difference in price. Here they are:

  • Nikon 70-300mm F4.5-5.6D ED AF Zoom Lens (£284.00)
  • Nikon Af 70-300/4.0-5.6 G Black (£145.99)

Which one would work with my camera (Nikon D50) and if both, what sort of difference would I get with buying the cheaper one.

both are Nikon F mount, both will work with your camera.
They are both pretty much the same lens, but the more expensive has extra low dispersion glass element - which are meant to reduce flare, ghosting etc..

However, I would recommend checking out the likes of the Sigma 70-300 APO DG. Get a good copy of it and it's far better than either of the Nikkor's you've listed.
