Nikon D5000 Macro lens

What is your budget mate? Also, is do you shoot other stuff alongside macro? Could be an idea to get something like a 50mm f1.8 and then some extension tubes instead of an outright macro lens, but I suppose it depends on how much macro you shoot.

Won't be massive amounts of macro but your idea of 50mm and an extension tube sounds interesting. Have read i would need a 50 or 35 mm for better portraits eventually. Will it have good results? The kit lens I have just doesn't seem to get close enough or am I just being a noob ?

Kit lens will do adequate macro shots with some Kenko AF extension tubes, these can be found on the bay for around 80-100 notes and will work very well with a D5000 :)

I'm not sure exactly which lens works with your body as I am a canon guy but when I had just the kit lens I picked up a 50mm f1.8 and it rarely comes off my camera now. I think Nikon's version is also very good but I love my 50 1.8, it is a great lens to have alongside the kit lens and with extension tubes you can get some decent results. Have a quick look through some of these to get an idea of what you can do with extension tubes :)

Remember, if you use a longer focal length lens you won't have to get as close to your subject and should prevent you casting a shadow over it :)

There are two current Nikon 50 f1.8 lenses. There's the AF-s G which costs about £175 and is fully compatible with the D5000, and the AFD (costing about £110) which won't auto focus on the D5000.
