Nikon D5000 Macro lens

Won't be massive amounts of macro but your idea of 50mm and an extension tube sounds interesting. Have read i would need a 50 or 35 mm for better portraits eventually.Will it have good results? The kit lens I have just doesn't seem to get close enough or am I just being a noob ?
