Nikon D700

Love my D700 to be honest, and will have to think long and hard on going to to the D800, especially with rumoured specs and price.

Was shooting a small gig for a friends website last Saturday in terrible lighting conditions and the needed the photo's for Sunday evening, so no time to post process. Wacked the iso up to 12800 (was using a 24-70 so not super wide apperature) but still more than usable when shrinking the image down below 50%, infact the noise grain kinda suited the atmosphere of the venue.

How much is the D800 going to be roughly?

I would have thought the D700 is going to still hold its value no?

Like the D3 aint going to shift that much in price compared to the D4 is it?

Just looked up the price on WC, £1850 is a joke!

Price is high but they will give cash back on the lens and also offer me the 6 months worth of nikon offers again which is great for lenses etc...

I saved a fortune with my D7000 with this offer!!

Will pick up on friday and see how we get on.

Depends on how much the D800 cost's, what the availability is like, and how good it is. The 5d classic prices are reasonable compared to 5Dii...

Seriously, even a few months ago I picked up an almost new D700 for £1250, that's like £600 cheaper. At the time I thought that was fairly expensive when before the natural disasters they could be picked up at around £1400 new.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a brand new D700 right now. It's a great camera - true, but with the D800 announcement imminent I'd advise waiting. If you decide that the D800 is too excessive, then I'm sure there will be numerous second hand D700's going up for sale ( at much lower prices than they presently are ).

Same story for the D3, I think that when the D4 appears the value of D3's will depreciate quite a bit. Not true for the D3s though which seems to be quite close to the D4 performance wise. I can see them retaining their value until at least the next generation of cameras become available.

Not fussed about pixels tbh! My D70 still puts out amazing images if not better than my D7000 imho just a bit smaller thats all.

You think the antiquated 1st generation D70 sensor produces images on a par with the D7000? The D7000 has one of the best sensors Nikon's ever made, if you think that it's comparable to the D70 then you might be disappointed with the D700...

I thought Sony made Nikon's sensors?

Supposedly Nikon make their own sensor designs, although with the D7000 it was probably only small tweaks if any, so your above statement would be a bit like saying AMD & Nvidia don't make GPU's, TSMC do, when in reality TSMC is just the fab, it doesn't design the chip architecture.
With Sony it's a little different, as they do design there own chips as well, so Nikon has the option to purchase an off the shelf chip if they want, or a base architecture.

I think the images captured with d70 were amazing and when I tried the d7000 they looked ok but not that much better just much larger.
I can't remember the lens I used with the d70 but it was sharp as hell.

Obviously the d7000 is better I'm just bigging up the trusty d70, it's just that I've not got the right settings or lens to get the shot I want. Still can't get used to the af settings yet!

I know what you mean. The D70 had a really weak AA filter and produced extremely clean raw files with some good glass. Granted, the high iso and dynamic range were rubbish by todays standards but the camera was great. The thing I miss most about it is the form factor. It just felt right in my hands compared to the D7000 which is a bit too small for me.
