Sony has confirmed on its official PlayStation 3 site that the low-end $500 PlayStation 3 configuration will not be able to play Blu-Ray movies in their full 1080p resolution. Playback of Blu-Ray discs at 1080p requires an HDMI connection, which the $500 model lacks.

Is there any ponit in sony making this cheeper unit?

I am looking forward to the PS3 and thats what i want not a cut down PS2.5

They'll probably work on 1080i fine though.

At the end of the day, for the vast majority of PS3 owners, they're going to be using it solely as a games machine, and i'd bet 98% of them aren't going to have 1080p capable TVs, and quite a lot of them aren't even going to have HDTV when the PS3 does arrive.

Games are still going to look the same, play as quick and all that stuff, so it's not a big downer, it's only for those real anal movie buffs that want the best picture possible, and if they're going to fork out a couple of grand for a TV with 1080p, they're not going to be too bothered about spending an exta £50-100 on the 60GB PS3.

No movie buff in their right mind would buy a PS3 for bluray movies anyway.

Yeah, forgot to add that sentence. If the PS2 is anything to go by regarding for DVD playback, then it could be appauling, but most buffs will go for standalone players, that'll probably cost about the same as a PS3 anyway if they want to go for the best stuff, but that's only really from the outset, it'll probably be different in the following years.

Actually the ps3 will be able to play 1080p movies because companies aren't enabling the image constraint token until at least 2010 meaning 1080p will play fine through component. But who has a 1080p tv anyway?

From the PS3 US site, it sounds like you're right.

Video output in HD required cables and an HD-compatible display, both sold separately. Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard. HDMI cable not included. Additional equipment may be required to use the HDMI connector.

Hmm, also sounds like sony are shafting you more with that find, as they don't seem to be even shipping the 60GB version with a HDMI cable, and I find that personally quite shocking! The main reason people are going to be buying the 60GB system other than the wireless / extra space is the HDMI, and they'll be quite annoyed that they've paid all that extra cash for somthing that you can't get straight out the box without another cable!.

I certainly won't be buying the 60gb ps3 anyway.

Wifi is nowhere near as fast as wired and imo less reliable so I'll never use it.
Card readers, I can't even think of why I would want one of those on my ps3.
Hdmi isn't needed for 1080p games or movies without ict and my display only supports up to 720p anyway.
60Gb hard drive, what would I use this for instead of my pc?

Ahh you forget one thing, the PS3 will be the first chance people will have for a Blu Ray 1080p experience. Sony have said many times the PS3 brings the console out ot the bedroom and into the living room and according to what Sony themselves said at the recent Berlin IFA show was that PS3 is a major factor to Blu Rays success.

Yes indeed players will offer more versatility and less operating noise etc but dont go thinking PS3 will suck at playing back 1080p video, you may be surprised.

Taking the PS2 as an example and using it for DVD performance is rather silly, this is a whole new ballgame.

PS3 is not just a games console, its certainly not priced as one now is it.

Yeah, I realise it'll likely be very good, as it being a new digtail standard, it's likely they'll make it as good as they can, especially as they're trying to sell Blu-Ray to the masses. It was silly of me to compare them yes, I was going to take that bit out when I wrote the post, but didn't for some reason :p

They do say they want it to be a movement from the bedroom to the living room, but I really doubt that many people are going to make that move if they're already playing their games etc in the bedroom. The 360 should be doing the same, but I've personally not seen a major difference in peoples choices of use of the console, though the 360 is yet to allow HD DVD experience to take off, so can't directly compare them when taking that into account.

But still, there's not enough people moving to HDTV enough yet, let alone enough people moving to 1080p standards.

Wikipedia is the first place I looked to check this fact before posting. It is stated there. If you watch the E3 footage for Sony it was announced there.
Okay then, I apologise, but Sony really havn't made it clear enough, and online retailers are certainly confused about it still. I watched the E3 footage, and I don't remember ever seeing them say that the UK would not be initially getting the 20GB version.

And though 2 months earlier to the other link posted, this article definately doesn't sound as though they said anything about it at E3:
