No 3G coverage, still get a G1?

I was just about to pull the trigger on a G1 and thought I best check my coverage on the T-Mobile web site. It's saying very good on 2G but no coverage on 3G.
I'll be mostly using my phone for browsing the internet so without 3G coverage, is it worthwhile?

Without 3G coverage the internet will be that slow, you'd be thinking of things to do whilst waiting for pages to load.

Unless you only plan on browsing through WiFi.

is any phone / network worth the time if you're only using 2g? Thats the only option I have living in the middle of nowhere but I can cope. all 3g or wifi does is drain your battery quicker. So I wouldn't be put off by that cos I can only presume you use 2g just now to browse the net?

I'm a total nugget when it comes to phones I think I get 3G now, when I'm connected to the internet I quite often get a red or black H in the corner.
I currently browse using mini opera and I think it's pretty slow at the moment tbh.

Yes, if you get an "H" in the corner, you are connecting by HSDPA (or 3.5G).

2G is less than a 10th of the speed.

Twaddle. WiFi will drain your battery, but a 3G phone in a 2G area will use as much power as being in a 3G area (well negligable difference).

which phone do you have just now? normally when Im browsing i get a 3G under the signal bar or 3.5G where its available. never had an H though:confused:

I've currently got an LG Viewty, I've just timed it and it normally takes between 5 - 15 seconds to load a new page and that's with a H in the corner.
If it's as quick as this on 2G then that'll be fine

Not twaddle at all, I've found that when I go to a 3g area and go on the net my battery drains a hell of a lot quicker than it normally does......but then again the nokia batteries in n95 n n96 never were any good in the first place

Did you not read what I said? 2G is at least 10 times SLOWER, more likely to be 50x slower.

The absolute fastest theoretical maximum you can connect at on a 2G network is 48kbps. HSDPA is 3.6 or 7.2mbps

Yes I did read what you said, but for some reason taking between 5 and 15 seconds can't be normal to load a page on a 3.5G connection, is it because I'm using mini opera which slows things down.
So a 2G connection will take between 50 and 150 seconds to load a page?

Those are the absolute maximum speeds, and real world speeds are going to be far slower. I can achieve upto 1mbps on Three.

Which network are you with that gives you an H?
Mind you T-mobile's signal is hit and miss at the best of times

Are you going to be browsing the net solely in your house? If not it shouldn't be a problem... unless T-Mobile's network coverage is bad in the entire surrounding vicinity, too :p

Well, i can acheive well over 3mbps on vodafone and o2. Either way 1mbps is still a hell of a lot faster than 48KILOBITS per second.
