No Idea what to write

There's no respect in lying about someone to appease someone else.

If he doesn't feel he can genuinely say something nice and mean it, he should just not return his card.

Why on earth do you have to lie? You dont have to say he was a brilliant man who worked selflessly for the good of others. You only have to respect he is dead and you are, even if begrudgingly, related. That is my point. My suggestion in a previous post full fills this criteria.

In all honesty you should write what you feel,but seeing as your having some trouble il try and suggest something.

What about something along the lines of:

Im affraid i didnt no < insert mums dads name here > very well, but im sure he was a good guy to anyone when he was most needed. I hope that where ever he is right now he is safe and happy.

But its really gotta come from you dude :S
