So,

Speed cameras, cameras fining you for parking offences, the government tracking you around the country on CCTV. The law abiding motorist is getting hammered whilst the not-registered/not insured/not MOTed driver gets away with it.

Say I take my font number plate off and snap half my back number plate off. I get two new ones and put them in the boot. I'm still insured, still taxed - just can't be seen on "camera".

If stopped by the police (given that there are so few of them on the road what are the chances) I simply say: "The kids round where I live seem to be doing this for a laugh, I've seen a few cars like this recently. I have got new ones in the boot but I'm really sorry I just haven't had time to put them on."

What would the police do/what can the police do ?

I seem to recall that Gibbo had no front plate on his Mustang - did he ever get any grief ?

£30 FPN, however with a back plate off as well you're asking for trouble, I doubt many BiB would believe that and would probably want to know why you hadn't reported the vandalism earlier.

If however you have a very low car, with a very low front numberplate it's entirely possible that it can get ripped off frequently.

Interesting, I'd like to know the answer to this.

I recently made the trip down to Surrey from the NE, the night before my return leg my rear number plate fell off. The place I was staying at only at parcel tape to stick it back on, but I made do with it :p. I've fixed it since, but did drive a short journey w/o it on and had no trouble (even drove past 2 police cars, but were on the other side of the road).

There's also the possibility of being arrested for "going equipped" if they consider the car may be used to drive off without paying for petrol or avoiding the congestion charge etc.

If there's a reasonable belief that's the case then you could be in trouble, at least the hassle from being arrested for it.

Stick on plates for the winrar ;)
Very useful when speeding past scameras & killing babys. Cuts the cost of motoring down by loads as well with all the free petrol you get :D

MmMmmmmmm Joke.

I guess this is half the reason I see so many cars with absolutely filthy numberplates tearing down the M2 ;)

This is probably going to be seen as trolling but isn't the above statement a contradiction in terms?

If you're a "law abiding motorist" why would you be concerned over speed cameras or parking illegally?

It is your responsibility to have them on your car, not in your boot. All depends on the copper who gets ya really (They have probably heard all the stories).

Disregarding the circumstances I imagine you'd have more luck NOT having the spare set in the boot otherwise it would incriminate yourself. That said, who vandalises cars by ripping off their numberplates?

This thread reminds me of that guy on "Road Wars" who stuck tape over a zero on his numberplates to make an 8 - then when he was pulled over said "those bloody kids again!". He got arrested btw for going equipped to steal, as Muncher mentioned.

I think that the real point I am trying to make is I would support:

1) Cameras that trap people tailgating
2) Cameras that trap people driving like muppets

Problem is that these have not been invented. The best we have is traffic cops and there are ever fewer of them as the number of "safety" cameras going up.

I just feel that the 'law abiding' motorist (by which I mean tax, MOT, insurance etc) is getting picked on more and more whilst the more serious motoring offences are not being adequately addressed.

In all seriousness the missing number plate thing is more of a protest than a serious attempt to break the law.

As for 'going equipped' I'm a 40 year old bloke with no record in a 06 car - not terribly likely to go around nicking petrol.

The only reason they can want us to have a front plate is for cameras ! I'm surprised bikes don't have to have a front plate.

Nowhere to mount it, if you stick it on the forks it will bend back or break at just normal speeds.

I'm sure they'll find a way. There is already quite a lot of call from vehicle legislators in the EU to force bikes to have front plates. It's mainly because of all the investment in front facing speed cameras such as SPECS and TUVELO.

Are they exempt from average speed cameras then?

Some SPECS have backup cameras that are rear facing and quite a lot of temporary SPECS are supervised by traffic police.

I've never been done by SPECS on my bike but then again, SPECS are usually in places for a reason such as around roadworks etc. so I rarely speed through them.

Bikes don't have front ones, I still feel cars shouldn't either, especially on some cars which just spoils the lines. The mx5 was front numberplateless for a while.

They used to have curved ones that followed the shape of the mudguard but they were stopped when the govt realised they were filleting pedestrians when they ran into them.

There have been people who have had their plate's swiped... What would happen if you got your plates nicked while at work, then drove home without knowing?
