No nvidia drivers other than 77.77 work?

I've got a 6800GT and the last time I installed drivers, they were the 77.77 ones from guru3d.com. The problem is that every time I try to upgrade the drivers to something more recent, it breaks. My process is:

1) Uninstall nvidia drivers from add/remove
2) Reboot
3) Run new driver package

At this point, most of the time it just blanks the screen and puts a curser at the top left. I can't do anything so have to reset the box and windows doesn't come up, it's just a blank screen. The only way to save it is to boot it into safe mode and then reinstall the 77.77 drivers which work perfectly.

I really really don't want to have to reinstall windows xp for the sake of slightly better IQ and framerates in games, the later drivers should just work. Any ideas why not?

I don't uninstall the old ones tbh, just run the setup package with the card still installed on whatever version of the FORCEWARE i had at the time.

Since getting this machine built I have gone through 7 versions of the drivers without an uninstall, and i've encountered no problems, and a fair few speed increases, so it must be working.

I had the same problem, I have a geforce 6600 agp. It wouldn't work with any drivers except 77.77 (same drivers as you  ). I had reformatted and reinstalled windows and it still didn't fix it.

I fixed it by changing the motherboard. Try updating the bios.

Yup, it's an AMD MPX chipset, so not particularly recent, and driver development stopped a while back...
