Noctua NH-D14 or Corsair H70

overclocking my 920 abit more than 4ghz prime95 getting 90c on temps with a h50 you think i should get the d14 instead? i also have a thermalright 120 ultra somewhere from wheni was overclocking a q6600

If you still have the Thermalright, simply get a mounting kit. It's still a very good cooler by today's standards. Not as good as the Noctua but not too far off to warrant the cost.

well i went from a thermalright ultra to a h50 got lower temps probably because i didnt have the right ammount of paste or a push pull setup.

the h50 went on my q6600 and also fitted the 920 with the same brackets

D14 every time!

My brother has both the Noctua and the H70, and the difference is night and day - from testing on all 3 of his rigs (Q6600, E8400, i7 920).

Well worth the cash.

Having spent all day tearing down, installing the Noctua and re-installing, I can honestly say it was worth it, the D14 is a thing to behold, shame about the colour of the fans, otherwise I can't fault it.
I had my fingers crossed that it would fit, was 99% sure it would as a Tuniq Tower 120 fitted great back when I was using a C2D, and it just squeezes in nicely.

Thanks to all who suggested it and Gerard for the thread. :)

With very basic non scientific testing, the h70 used to hit high 80's on a i7 930 @ stock under prime95 doing FFT's 'cos I ran it either with only one fan direct or both on the ULNA patch leads to control the noise.

The d14 has both fans on full, is half the noise of the crippled h70 and the same test running for the last 7/8 mins hasn't gone above 61c yet.

Hopefully I should be able to start to BCLK this chip now, been gagging to get stuck in but not a had a good enough cooler to deal with it.

:)

H70 for me,
I'm on the cusp of getting one of these, but I keep hearing reports of it gurgling to various degrees. As my main purpose for a new cooler is quiet, yet effective cooling, I'm a little wary now.

My plan B is now to get the D14 and have it run with just the centre 140 fan, and use the other 120 fan on the back of my Cosmos case. I will also get 2 more of the Noctua 120 fans for the top, and have all four on a PWM relay.
