i have currently beaten the 3ghz threshold with my Q6600
can run it at 3.6 but worried about temps so running at 3.15ghz atm
prime 95 small fft 66oC max @3.15ghz. my current cooler is a arctic cooling freezer pro7 works fine at 3ghz but will be clocking to 3.6 when i get my new cooler installed.

so just your experiences and whihc would you pick the extra fan is another noctua NF-P12

Hi, I have the Noctua with a two fan push/pull setup and they rock! And yes the second fan is a P12 as it's good to have matched airflow speeds on the pull end as the push end IMO. I also have a Noctua case exhaust right behind them and that's also a P12 as I am trying to keep good high speed airflow through all three fans.

The TRUE is also a top flight cooler from what I've read here, so I guess your choice will prob more be about what you like the look of most really...

Whatever you choose they are both great and you won't go far wrong with either. Enjoy! :)

I've got the Noctua with 2 fans in push/pull. I only saw 1 degree diffeence when adding a second fan during idle, but I did see around 4-5 improvement in load temps.

Right now, I am putting 1.3vcore (stock voltage) through a Q6600 at 3ghz, and my case temp is 26 degrees. Idle temps are 28,30,34,32 whilst gaming far cry 2 gets all cores to around 45. So I am happy with it.

As far as temps and max overclock goes, I can run just under 1.5vcore through the chip and temps under prime95 will max out at 68-69. So if you have a good clocking chip, I'd say this cooler is ace.

I don't think you can go wrong with either heatsink, they are both very good at what they do and from looking around the web by the time you buy a fan for the true they work out about the same price.

Ive used both, but i prefer my current TRUE black with 2 fans. At 3.6 ghz my temps with the noctua were going over 75'c (1.4vcore) put in the TRUE and dropped them to 68-68-62-62, that was with 2 1500rpm arctic fans, lapped the TRUE and cpu and replaced the fans with a pair of 2000 rpm sharkoon's and it dropped the temps into the mid 50's, was then able to push to 3.8ghz (1.50625 vcore) with temps still at 68-68-62-62 prime load.

should i match it to my antec tricool instead then?
I wouldnt worry to much about that, before i got my other sharkoons i used yate loon fans that ran at 1300 rpm iirc, temps were a wee bit higher but not much.

any tips on lapping the HSF and CPU? im a nooby:(
For the cpu, i started out with 400, then 600, 800, 1200 then 1500 and a quick run with 2000 grit paper, best to lap the cpu and cooler on a flat surface, a piece of glass is ideal. for the cooler i used the same grit papers except for 2000. Youll often see pics of lapped cpus that have a mirror finish. This isnt important, flatness is the result your after. Remeber though that lapping will void the warranty on your cpu and cooler.
