Noise from side intake fan - would a shroud help?

Hey all,

I recently changed to a Corsair Carbide 300R case which is great, except for one thing.

The mesh on the side panel is causing a particular noise when I mount a side intake fan on there, even with rubber washers to dampen vibrations.

This appears to be caused by the fan sucking air through the metal mesh, so I was wondered if using another 25mm fan carcass as a shroud would reduce this?

It's not that fast a fan either, as it's a Silverstone Suscool 121@900rpm.

Just wanted to ask first before I ruined a fan by stripping it out for the shroud.

I doubt an old fan shell would make much difference as its still the same area it's sucking through. However a purpose made one should work better as it would be sucking the air through a bigger area. If I'm making any sense :p

No that makes sense :)

There's 2 mesh areas for mounting a fan on the side panel, so I could try & cobble a taper down to a single fan.

Thanks for the idea.

I'm pretty sure I recall Corsair having some issues on the 650D with regards to a similar kind of issue. It must just be something about the way they design their mesh...
