Noise/ISO.... What's acceptable In your opinion?

That's what i thought too, that's why I went for the 550 and the L glass over a 7D with a kit lens

It's true, but crop camera's are hardly ideal if your fussy about noise.
As your with Canon already, I can only recommend the 5D, I'm pretty certain you will be happy with the image quality over the 550D etc. etc.

I moved to canon only a couple months ago, all new gear.
I've also got a Nikon D80 which until this point has out performed the 550 at low ISO's :/
Although I've yet to get some decent weather, thought canon bodies were supposed to be better for low noise and I really wanted the F4L lol

Nikon's been king of noise for the past half decade, don't know where you heard Canon was better? Though the d80 given its age should definitely be outperformed by the 550d, and I just checked that on DXOmark.

Yeah but as I was on a budget (student lol) I couldn't afford to replace to more modern Nikon gear so went to canon for a more modern body to get better iso quality, and I wanted the F4L, the canon seems easier to use and better to hold ergonomicly compared to a few nikons I looked at.

Complete opposite with modern DSLR bodies. Seriously though, if I was still using a Canon and on a budget, I have no doubt I would be using the original 5D, as the image quality is really great.

Don't get confused with megapixels either, the 550D images only has 19% larger dimensions than the 5D.
