Somewhere Fabulous...
Hi. Just got my Gainward 7900gt 512s from OCUK and one of the coolers is making a very annoying whiney noise. The other just makes normal fan noise, but the other produces a high pitch whine. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of this. i know its the fan as when i booted with just other card in there was no whine, and with this one on its own there was. and when i quickly pushed down on the fan to stop it spinning for a second at boot up the whine stopped.

Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of it? (other than buy a Zalman that is!)

It's a dodgy fan. I have had tons of fans in the past that went quiet if you tapped/stopped them for a moment, it's usually something to do with the bearings from what I have been told. It will also never go away and will decrease the life-span of the cooler.

Were I in your position I would RMA the card to OCuk while it's still covered by the warranty, with a full description of the problem and your technique for temporarily fixing it. They will either: -

a.) Fit a new cooler entirely and send the card back with warranty intact.
b.) Send the card back to Gainward and send you a whole new card.
c.) Send the card back to Gainward, who will replace the cooler and send it back.

The other option, as you know, is to buy a Zalman VF900-Cu (which really is always a good idea, faulty cooler or not) but you'd be getting the urges to buy two if you're using SLi. ;)

Thanks Exsomnis, thats what i thought. To be honest im fed up with RMAing things since the prblem with my other pair of GT's and since its payday on monday i think i'll just order the Zalman for the card with the noisey fan then wait til next payday to order the other one! Thank god i can leave my pc alone after that until DX10 cards become the norm and more affordable. That is unless AMD release some kinda Uber chip in their new socket!!

Yeah it can be a pain, but it's better to be safe than sorry. One of my Akasa case fans was just like your cooler, it had to be tapped or it would grind a lot.

It recently died. Luckily that was not a GPU cooler I had to throw in the bin.

Yeah, specially with these puppies! luckily they alread have heatsinks on the ram chips so i don't have to shell out for them! :D
