morning guys :)

just got back from holiday and heard a noisey (i say noisey, its just irritating and wasnt there before i went) rattle which i found out to be my GFX card.

its a brand new x1900xt iceq3 with the cool looking blue cooler from HIS, and it was silent in the past. now its making a rattle - theres no dust in it (its new but i cleaned it to make sure)

if i stop and start the fan, it runs ok for a couple of seconds, then starts rattling again. nothings loose (as far as i can see) and the card isnt running hot (46'C in the control panel) - it also hasnt been stressed for the last week as ive been on my hols...

any ideas on why it might be doing this? is it a real cause for concern, and is it a known issue with these cards / coolers

cheers,

craig

after posting - thought of a way that i could see if its RPM related or not, but i need too get something that i can change the fan speed of my GFX card from windows - ive got speed fan, but that only picks up things that are plugged into 3pins (currently my PSU and my CPU fan)

thanks again,

craig

It will allow you to adjust the fan speeds for different temperatures on auto setting or you can adjust it on the manual setting with a slider.

Check that the fanblades are clean. Sometimes one of the blades has more dirt on than the others and becomes unbalanced. Like some of the ceiling fans you may have seen in peoples houses that havent been balanced properly.

well considering its a brand new card, and wasnt doing it before i went away, and is now, and no one has been near the pc - no dust, no nothing - i cant see how this is a cause - and like i say, if i stop and start the fan, its ok for a moment, then it starts

Last suggestion would be to lay the computer on its side, even upside down, then start it up. If the sound goes away then its most likely the bearing in the fan. Problem is that most manufacturers will provide a waratee for a faulty card, but not the fan.
